Aim: To investigate the prognostic value of preoperative platelet count (PLT) in patients with primary gallbladder cancer (GBC).

Methods: The clinical data of 223 GBC patients after surgery was retrospectively reviewed. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was plotted to verify the optimum cutoff point for PLT. Univariate and multivariate survival analyses were performed to identify the factors associated with the prognosis.

Results: The ROC curve showed that the optimum cutoff point for PLT was 178 × 10(9)/L, and the entire cohort was stratified into group A with PLT > 178 × 10(9)/L and group B with PLT ≤ 178 × 10(9)/L. Group A had a better survival than group B (P < 0.001). There was an obvious difference between the two groups in terms of the differentiation degree, advanced tumor stage, lymph node metastasis (P < 0.001) and pathological type (P < 0.05). The univariate analysis demonstrated that tumor location, differentiation degree, TNM stage, Nevin stage, lymph node metastasis and PLT were associated with overall survival (P < 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, PLT (P = 0.032), lymph node metastasis (P = 0.007), tumor location (P < 0.001) and TNM stage (P = 0.005) were independent prognostic factors.

Conclusion: PLT is closely correlated with GBC prognosis and could be used to identify the population with a poorer prognosis after surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • This text discusses two rare cases of calciphylaxis that showed eye-related issues without typical skin symptoms, aiming to increase awareness of the condition.
  • The cases include a 76-year-old woman with kidney failure and anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION), and a 44-year-old man on dialysis with AION and central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO).
  • It emphasizes the importance of recognizing calciphylaxis in kidney patients with eye problems, and suggests a temporal artery biopsy for accurate diagnosis to prevent unnecessary treatments like steroids.

Background: Immunological abnormalities are implicated in the pathogenesis of many chronic diseases. Due to the drug-related adverse effects of currently available orthodox immunomodulators, natural immunomodulators are being looked upon as potential agents to replace them in therapeutic regimens. This research aimed to investigate the immunomodulatory potential of L.

Introduction: Real-world evidence is needed to optimize pharmacotherapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The effectiveness of inhaled tiotropium/olodaterol according to baseline symptoms and previous COPD treatment and predictors of response were assessed.

Methods: This was a post hoc analysis of a 52-week post-marketing surveillance study of tiotropium/olodaterol in 1255 Japanese patients with COPD of all severities.

Background: The FEbrile Neutropenia after ChEmotherapy (FENCE) score was developed to estimate the risk of febrile neutropenia (FN) at first cycle of chemotherapy but has not been externally validated. We aimed to validate the FENCE score based on its risk groups in patients treated at a comprehensive cancer center.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of treatment-naïve adult patients with solid tumors and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma who received first-cycle chemotherapy between January and November 2019.
