A series of thienylphenothiazine decorated carbazoles were synthesized and characterized by optical, electrochemical, thermal, and theoretical investigations. Absorption spectra of the compounds are influenced by the substitution pattern and chromophore number density. Compounds containing 2,7-substitution exhibited red-shifted absorption, while the chromophore loading on the other positions led to the increment in molar extinction coefficients due to the increase in the chromophore density. Multiple substitutions resulted in twisting of chromophores and affected the conjugative delocalization of the π-electrons, which produced shorter wavelength absorption for the 2,3,6,7-tetrasubstituted derivative. Interestingly, the compounds exhibited excited-state solvatochromism attributable to the structural reorganization-induced electronic perturbations. The solvatochromic data are supportive of a general solvent effect, which is further confirmed by Lippert-Mataga correlation. End-capping with butterfly shaped phenothiazine restrained the formation of molecular aggregates in the solid state. All of the compounds displayed exceptional thermal stability attributable to the rigid carbazole building block. Solution processed OLED fabricated using the new materials as emitting dopants in 4,4'-bis(9H-carbazol-9-yl)biphenyl host exhibited bluish green electroluminescence.

Although metal halide perovskites are positioned as the most powerful light-harvesting materials for sustainable energy conversion, there is a need for a thorough understanding of molecular design principles that would guide better engineering of organic hole-transporting materials, which are vital for boosting the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells. To address this formidable challenge, here, we developed a new design strategy based on the curved N-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon merged with T-shaped phenazines being decorated with (phenyl)-di--methoxyphenylamine (OMeTAD)─N-PAH23/24 and -3,6-ditertbutyl carbazole (TBCz)─N-PAH25/26. As N-PAH23/24 exhibited satisfying thermal stability, the comparative studies performed with various experimental and simulation methods revealed a pronounced correlation between the depth of the central cyclazine core and the form of the T-shape units.

A carbazolyl-based fluorescent metal-organic framework with deep-blue light emission and a high quantum yield (88%) has been screened out by changing the ratio of mixed ligands, named Cz-MOF-2, which was constructed by ZrO(OH) clusters, 3-(9-ethyl-9-carbazol-3-yl)-4-methylthieno[2,3-]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylate (HECMTDC) and 3,4-dimethyl-dihydrothieno[2,3-]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylate (HDMTDC). Cz-MOF-2 has excellent sensitivity in fluorescent sensing of 2,6-dichloro-4-nitroaniline (DCN), nitrofurazone (NZF), and nitrofurantoin (NFT) with detection limits of 3.37 × 10, 1.

Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is an organic-inorganic hybrid molecule with two structural variations, closed- and open-cage configurations, referred to as completely condensed POSS (CC-POSS) and corner-opened POSS (CO-POSS), respectively. In this study, we synthesized 12 dimers by combining CC- and CO-POSS variants decorated with isobutyl or phenyl substituents to explore their structure-property relationships. The choice of substituents, both at the cage vertices and open sites, significantly affected the thermal and optical properties of the materials.

Luminescent organometallic complexes of earth-abundant copper(I) have long been studied in organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). Particularly, Cu(I)-based carbene-metal-amide (CMA) complexes have recently emerged as promising organometallic emitters. However, blue-emitting Cu(I) CMA complexes have been rarely reported.

The identification of the electrogenerated reactive intermediates is essential for an in-depth understanding of the electroredox processes. Although various short-lived intermediates are well characterized by coupling electrochemistry with mass spectrometry (EC/MS), many electrogenerated transient species (τ < 1 μs) are still rarely captured by the currently available EC/MS approaches. Here, we present a low-delay coupling device, which was constructed by decorating a microelectrode into the front tip of a microsized ion emitter.
