The Role of Podocytes in Lupus Pathology.

Curr Rheumatol Rep

December 2024

Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, 330 Brookline Avenue, CLS-937, Boston, MA, 02215, USA.

Purpose Of Review: Kidney injury due to lupus nephritis (LN) is a severe and sometimes life-threatening sequela of systemic lupus erythematosus. Autoimmune injury to podocytes has been increasingly demonstrated to be a key driver of LN-related kidney injury because these cells play key roles in glomerular filtration barrier homeostasis. Irreparable podocyte injury impairs these processes and can lead to proteinuria, which is an indicator of poor prognosis in LN.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common clinical condition with significant health risks for patients and is widely recognised as a major public health concern. Laboratory medicine plays a crucial role in both diagnosing and managing CKD, as diagnosis and staging rely on estimated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and evaluating albuminuria (or proteinuria). It was evident that the laboratory assessment of CKD in Malaysia is not standardised.

Mutations in the gene ABCA4 coding for photoreceptor-specific ATP-binding cassette subfamily A member 4, are responsible for Stargardts Disease type 1 (STGD1), the most common form of inherited macular degeneration. STGD1 typically declares early in life and leads to severe visual handicap. Abca4 gene-deletion mouse models of STGD1 accumulate lipofuscin, a hallmark of the disease, but unlike the human disease show no or only moderate structural changes and no functional decline.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating, uniformly lethal degenerative disease of motor neurons, presenting with relentlessly progressive muscle atrophy and weakness. More than fifty genes carrying causative or disease-modifying variants have been identified since the 1990s, when the first ALS-associated variant in the gene SOD1 was discovered. The most commonly mutated ALS genes in the European populations include the C9orf72, SOD1, TARDBP and FUS.

Cognitive decline and neuroinflammation in a mouse model of obesity: An accelerating role of ageing.

Brain Behav Immun

December 2024

Department of Geriatrics, University Medical Center Goettingen, Robert-Koch-Str. 42, 37075 Goettingen, Germany; DZHK (German Center for Cardiovascular Research), Partner Site Göttingen, 37075 Göttingen, Germany. Electronic address:

Obesity, a pandemic, worldwide afflicts almost one billion people. Obesity and ageing share several pathological pathways leading to neurological disorders. However, due to a lack of suitable animal models, the long-term effects of obesity on age-related disorders- cognitive impairment and dementia have not yet been thoroughly investigated.
