Assembly of two ditopic units, a phenanthroline substituted by 4-ethynyl pyridines at the 2-and 9-positions and a dimetallic paddlewheel, gives a linear chain polymer rather than a closed cyclic species, which would appear equally possible. The chain may be decorated by binding a copper-containing macrocycle around the phenanthroline units to form a polypseudorotaxane. When two phenanthroline ligands are assembled in a first step around copper(I), the paddlewheel acceptor can link them in a second step to form a two-dimensional interwoven grid that resembles the form of a chain-link fence. Each copper(I) centre in this structure is chiral, and the crystal shows complete homochirality, implying selection during the assembly process.

A broad distribution pullulan (PUL) sample was hydrophobically modified by a relative longer decenyl succinic anhydride (DCSA) side chains with seven different degree of substitution (DS) to obtain the PUL-DCSA. Polymer loop structure commonly appears in biological phenomena, such as DNA looping and DNA denaturation. When a chain forms a loop, its elastic behavior differs from that of an open chain due to the loss of entropy. In the case of reversible loop formation, interesting behavior emerges related to the multistate nature of the conformations.

Pure C clusters have a linear chain structure. However, here, we report using ab initio calculations the transformation of a chain into a cyclic ring structure with the capping of Ca, Sr, and Ba atoms. Further calculations on neutral and charged clusters doped with Sc, Y, and La atoms show stabilization of a cation C isoelectronic cyclic ring capped with the metal (M) atom, but anion clusters doped with these trivalent atoms form a C like MC ring, which deforms to a necklace structure.
