A 10-year-old castrated male mixed-breed dog exhibited vomiting, lethargy and anorexia. An abdominal ultrasound examination revealed a focal dilation of the abdominal aorta. The dog died 2 days after examination, and necropsy revealed a ruptured aneurysm at the abdominal aorta between the kidneys. Histological examination revealed severe granulomatous and necrotizing pan-arteritis with fungal organisms. Graphium species was identified through DNA sequence analysis of the PCR product from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples. To our knowledge, this is the first report of aortic aneurysm caused by Graphium species in a dog. Sequence was submitted to the DNA Data Bank of Japan with the accession number LC007972.

Species discrimination of insects is an important aspect of ecology and biodiversity research. The traditional methods based on human visual experience and biochemical analysis cannot strike a balance between accuracy and timeliness. Morphological identification using computer vision and machine learning is expected to solve this problem, but image features have poor accuracy for very similar species and usually require complicated networks that are unfriendly to portable edge devices.

Chromosome rearrangements may distort 3D chromatin architectures and thus change gene regulation, yet how 3D chromatin structures evolve in insects is largely unknown. Here, we obtain chromosome-level genomes for four butterfly species, Graphium cloanthus, Graphium sarpedon, Graphium eurypylus with 2n = 30, 40, and 60, respectively, and Papilio bianor with 2n = 60. Together with large-scale Hi-C data, we find that inter-chromosome rearrangements very rarely disrupted the pre-existing 3D chromatin structure of ancestral chromosomes.

The wings of the purple spotted swallowtail Graphium weiskei are marked by an unusual bright colour pattern. Spectrophotometry on G. weiskei wings demonstrated the presence of a pigment with an absorption spectrum (peak wavelength λmax=676 nm) similar to that of the bile pigment sarpedobilin in the wings of the congeneric Graphium sarpedon (λmax=672 nm).

We present the complete genome sequences of 9 species of Papilionidae from 3 genera (Graphium, Ornithoptera, Papilio). Illumina sequencing was performed on genetic material from individual wild-caught specimens. The reads were assembled using a de novo method followed by a finishing step.
