Results of investigations in extraordinary patients should be dealt with cautiously; it is often prudent to repeat tests. Though the aims of treatment in such cases are often the same, differences in approach to the problem are illuminating.

Over the past few decades, many studies have been conducted to explore the link between tinnitus and lipid metabolism, yielding inconsistent results. In our current study, we compared the prevalence of various lipid metabolism abnormalities in patients with chronic subjective idiopathic tinnitus (CSIT) to the official prevalence data of dyslipidaemia in the general adult Hungarian population. To counteract the distorting effect of the co-increase in both conditions with age, we also examined this relationship by age groups.

Severe hypercholesterolemia/possible familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is relatively common but underdiagnosed and undertreated. We investigated whether implementing clinical decision support (CDS) was associated with lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in patients with severe hypercholesterolemia/possible FH (LDL-C ≥ 190 mg/dL). As part of a pre-post implementation study, a CDS alert was deployed in the electronic health record (EHR) in a large health system comprising 3 main sites, 16 hospitals and 53 clinics.

Introduction: We aimed to summarize evidence on the effect of poor medication adherence on clinical outcomes and health resource utilization (HRU) among patients with hypertension and/or dyslipidemia.
Areas Covered: A systematic review of studies reporting clinical outcomes and HRU for patients by status of adherence to antihypertensives and/or lipid-lowering medications was searched using Embase, MEDLINE, and MEDLINE In-Process and supplemented by manual searches of conference abstracts. In total, 45 studies were included, with most being retrospective observational studies ( = 36).

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is the most common inherited life-threatening disorder of lipid metabolism. Early diagnosis and treatment are the key to reduce the cumulative life-long cardiovascular burden of patients with FH. The high number of variants described as variants of unknown significance is the largest obstacle to achieve a definitive FH diagnosis.
