In populations of small effective size (N), such as those in conservation programmes, companion animals or livestock species, inbreeding control is essential. Homozygosity-by-descent (HBD) segments provide relevant information in that context, as they allow accurate estimation of the inbreeding coefficient, provide locus-specific information and their length is informative about the "age" of inbreeding. Our objective was to evaluate tools for predicting HBD in future offspring based on parental genotypes, a problem equivalent to identifying segments identical-by-descent (IBD) among the four parental chromosomes.

Breast incidentaloma: Cardiac PET readers beware.

Radiol Case Rep

February 2025

Mayo Clinic Florida, Department of Radiology, Division of Breast Imaging, 4500 San Pablo Rd, Jacksonville, FL, 32224, USA.

Breast cancer remains one of the most common causes of cancer and cancer-related death in women. With increases in medical imaging utilization, incidentally detected cancer has become more prevalent. Specifically, breast cancer can be incidentally detected on nuclear cardiac imaging scans due to its high metabolic activity and because the tumor may fall within the field of view during these studies.

Beware of Bear? Long-Term Spatio-Temporal Patterns of Human-Bear Conflict in Connecticut.

Environ Manage

November 2024

Department of Geography & Sustainable Development, University of Miami, Coral Gables, FL, USA.

In this study, we examine the spatio-temporal patterns of citizen-reported human-bear conflict (HBC) from 2002 to 2022 and use the Forest-Based and Boosted Classification (FBBC) technique to assess the significance of several factors in the occurrence of HBC. Our analysis reveals a significant increase in HBC incidents over the study period, with the fewest conflicts in 2002 (217) and the most in 2022 (4455). These were concentrated in northwestern Connecticut, particularly eastern Litchfield County and western Hartford County.

Purpose Artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly gained popularity with the growth of ChatGPT (OpenAI, San Francisco, USA) and other large-language model chatbots, and these programs have tremendous potential to impact medicine. One important area of consequence in medicine and public health is that patients may use these programs in search of answers to medical questions. Despite the increased utilization of AI chatbots by the public, there is little research to assess the reliability of ChatGPT and alternative programs when queried for medical information.

Carboxamidates as equatorial ligands in dirhodium paddlewheel catalysts are widely believed to increase selectivity at the expense of reactivity. The results of the combined experimental and computational approach described in this paper show that one has to beware of such generalizations. First, Rh NMR revealed how strongly primary carboxamidates impact the electronic nature of the rhodium center they are bound to; at the same time, such ligands stabilize donor/acceptor carbenes by engaging their ester carbonyl group into peripheral interligand hydrogen bonding.
