Radon ((222)Rn) emanation coefficients for the representative soils distributed in Okinawa Island, Japan, have been estimated empirically. Arithmetic means of the emanation coefficients for dry and moist conditions were calculated to be 0.19 and 0.29, respectively. In Okinawa, the soils are traditionally classified into three types, namely the dark red soils, the residual regosols and the red and yellow soils. The dark red soils have relatively high coefficients. The residual regosols and the red and yellow soils have relatively low coefficients. To investigate the variable factor of the emanation coefficients, analyses of radioactive elements and physical properties have also been performed on the soils. For the dark red soils, the contents of the fine particle and the (226)Ra are relatively higher than those for the other soils. Based on these results, it is suggested that the variation in the radon emanation coefficient is mainly regulated by the (226)Ra concentration, the particle sizes and the water contents of the soils.

Article Synopsis
  • * Using a NaI(Tl) detector, it found that the concentrations of Ra and Th were lower than the global average.
  • * The measured radon exhalation rates averaged 25 mBq kg h, while thoron rates averaged 385 Bq m h, with further analysis on emanation coefficients and the relationship between parent and daughter radionuclides.

The inherent radioactivity of radon gas presents potential exposure risks to human beings through ingestion and inhalation of its radioisotopes Rn (radon) and Rn (thoron) from water sources. Recent studies have been conducted to assess radon concentrations in different environmental matrices such as water, air, and soil, due to their detrimental impact on human health. As the main cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and an acknowledged contributor to stomach cancer when ingested, the present study aimed to preliminarily assess radon and thoron levels in the Uranium bearing area of Poli in the Faro division of Cameroon, known for its significant U-deposits.

Solid process fine waste or tailings of a uranium mill is a potential source of release of radiologically significant gaseous radon (Rn). A number of variables such as radium (Ra) content, porosity, moisture content, and tailings density can affect the extent of emanation from the tailings. Further, if a cover material is used for remediation purposes, additional challenges due to changes in the matrix characteristics in predicting the radon flux can be anticipated.

There is a significant impact of the radon diffusion coefficient and the free radon production rate on the exhalation of radon from porous materials that can be regarded as spheres, hexahedrons, or cylinders. To understand this effect, the radon exhalation rules of spherical porous media with different radii were studied according to the radon diffusion migration theory. A specialized method for simultaneous determination of the radon diffusion coefficient and the free radon production rate of the spherical porous media was proposed, and applied to determine the above two parameters for two hemispherical test blocks with different radii.

In this work, the radon emanation coefficients for selected building materials that are most often used in Serbia for covering floor surfaces (concrete, concrete screed, granite, glazed ceramic tiles, marble, roofing tile, and terrazzo tile) were determined, and the influence of the material structure on their values. The concentration ofRa activity in the samples was determined using the gamma spectrometry method. Radon emanation was measured with the RAD7 device.
