Radioactive cerium is a nuclear toxicant. Metallic cerium is used in industry. Aspects of the intracellular metabolism of this element were studied following intraperitoneal injection and aerosol exposure in rat. Two microanalytic methods, an electron microprobe and ionic microanalysis, enabled the sites of incorporation and the process of intracellular concentration of cerium to be determined in the liver, lung, kidney, bone marrow and bone tissue. The very high sensitivity of ionic analysis enabled very low concentrations of cerium to be detected with a spatial resolution of 0.5 microns. Microanalysis by electron microprobe permitted: (i) the lysosomal localization of cerium to be determined; and (ii) the lysosomal coprecipitation of cerium with phosphorus to be demonstrated. Results are discussed in relation to aspects of radiological protection.

Increasing soil salinity causes significant crop losses globally; therefore, understanding plant responses to salt (sodium) stress is of high importance. Plants avoid sodium toxicity through subcellular compartmentation by intricate processes involving a high level of elemental interdependence. Current technologies to visualize sodium, in particular, together with other elements, are either indirect or lack in resolution.

Chemical weathering of lithologies with high geochemical backgrounds such as black shale has been proposed to be a critical source for toxic elements in soil and water systems. However, mechanisms controlling the release, migration and enrichment of toxic elements during black shale weathering are poorly understood. This study utilized a suite of micro analytical techniques such as TESCAN integrated mineral analyzer (TIMA), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron micro-probe analysis (EMPA) to elucidate the intimate relationship between mineralogical transformations and elemental behaviors from profile scale to mineral scale.

A microporous zincophosphate with the idealized formula NaZn[Zn(PO)] was obtained through high-temperature hydrothermal synthesis and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, microprobe analysis and X-ray diffraction. The orthorhombic compound, which crystallizes in acentric space group Pna2 with unit-cell parameters a = 12.9901 (2), b = 16.

The Apollo 17 73001/73002 double drive tube, collected at the base of the South Massif in the Taurus-Littrow Valley, was opened in 2019 as part of the Apollo Next Generation Sample Analysis program (ANGSA). A series of continuous thin sections were prepared capturing the full length of the upper portion of the double drive tube (73002). The aim of this study was to use Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by SCANing electron microscopy (QEMSCAN), to search for clasts of non-lunar meteoritic origin and to analyze the mineralogy and textures within the core.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) pollutes natural waters, but some impacted systems show natural attenuation. We sought to identify the biogeochemical mechanisms responsible for the natural attenuation of AMD. We hypothesized that biogenic sulfide-mediated iron reduction is one mechanism and tested this in an experimental model system.
