We developed an automated frame selection algorithm for high-resolution microendoscopy video sequences. The algorithm rapidly selects a representative frame with minimal motion artifact from a short video sequence, enabling fully automated image analysis at the point-of-care. The algorithm was evaluated by quantitative comparison of diagnostically relevant image features and diagnostic classification results obtained using automated frame selection versus manual frame selection. A data set consisting of video sequences collected in vivo from 100 oral sites and 167 esophageal sites was used in the analysis. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.78 (automated selection) versus 0.82 (manual selection) for oral sites, and 0.93 (automated selection) versus 0.92 (manual selection) for esophageal sites. The implementation of fully automated high-resolution microendoscopy at the point-of-care has the potential to reduce the number of biopsies needed for accurate diagnosis of precancer and cancer in low-resource settings where there may be limited infrastructure and personnel for standard histologic analysis.

Background: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is an innovative binary form of radiation therapy with high selectivity towards cancer tissue based on the neutron capture reaction B(n,α)Li, consisting in the exposition of patients to neutron beams after administration of a boron compound with preferential accumulation in cancer cells. The high linear energy transfer products of the ensuing reaction deposit their energy at the cell level, sparing normal tissue. Although progress in accelerator-based BNCT has led to renewed interest in this cancer treatment modality, in vivo dose monitoring during treatment still remains not feasible and several approaches are under investigation.

In the study of structural materials, the analysis of fracture and deformation resistance plays an important role, particularly in materials widely used in the construction industry, such as poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). PVC is a popular material used, among others, in the manufacture of window profiles, doors, pipes, and many other structural components. The aim of this research was to define the influence of the degree of milling of the glass-fibre-reinforced composite on the strength of the window frame welds, and in the next step, to propose new welding parameters to obtain sufficient strength properties that allow reducing the cost of the technological welding operation.

The systematic identification and functional characterization of noncanonical translation products, such as novel peptides, will facilitate the understanding of the human genome and provide new insights into cell biology. Here, we constructed a high-coverage peptide sequencing reference library with 11,668,944 open reading frames and employed an ultrafiltration tandem mass spectrometry assay to identify novel peptides. Through these methods, we discovered 8945 previously unannotated peptides from normal gastric tissues, gastric cancer tissues and cell lines, nearly half of which were derived from noncoding RNAs.
