A highly effective and facile synthesis route is developed to create and tailor metal-decorated and nitrogen-functionalized active microporous carbon materials from ZIF-8. Clear metal- and pyrrolic-N-induced enhancements of the cyclic CO2 uptake capacities and binding energies are achieved, particularly at a much lower carbonization temperature of 700 °C than those often reported (1000 °C). The high-temperature carbonization can enhance the porosity but only at the expense of considerable losses of sample yield and metal and N functional sites. The findings are comparatively discussed with carbons derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) reported previously. Furthermore, the porosity of the MOF-derived carbon is critically dependent on the structure of the precursor MOF and the crystal growth. The current strategy offers a new and effective route for the creation and tuning of highly active and functionalized carbon structures in high yields and with low energy consumption.

The successful synthesis of finely tuned Ni Sn nanoalloy phases containing ZnO catalyst with a small particle size (6.7 nm) from a mixed-metal zeolitic imidazolate framework (MM-ZIF) is investigated. The catalyst was evaluated for the efficient production of 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PDO) from crude glycerol and comprehensively characterized using several analytical techniques.

Exploring highly active, stable electrocatalysts with earth-abundant metal centers for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is essential for sustainable energy conversion. Due to the high cost and scarcity of platinum, it is a general trend to develop metal-N-C (M-N-C) electrocatalysts, especially those prepared from the zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF) to replace/minimize usage of noble metals in ORR electrocatalysis for their amazingly high catalytic efficiency, great stability, and readily-tuned electronic structure. In this review, the most pivotal advances in mechanisms leading to declined catalytic performance, synthetic strategies, and design principles in engineering ZIF-derived M-N-C for efficient ORR catalysis, are presented.

Reasonable doping is beneficial to the generation of defects, which is a feasibility strategy to improve the ZnO sensing performance. Herein, we presented an in situ self-sacrificing template strategy for fabricating Co doped h-ZnO core-shell structures (h-ZnO/ZnCo) with different defect contents, pyrolyzing hierarchical porous ZnO (h-ZnO) sub-microspheres coated by zeolite imidazolate frameworks (h-ZnO/ZIF-ZnCo). The investigations of X-ray photoelectron (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectra indicate that donor defects include zinc interstitial (Zn) and oxygen vacancy (V) in h-ZnO/ZnCo can be tuned by Co dopant (x = 0-30%).

M-N-C catalysts with optimized local and external structures offer great potential for replacing expensive and labile Pt-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. Herein, we report a novel and facile strategy of synthesizing ultrafine ZIF-derived Co-N-C catalysts by precisely controlling the crystallization rate of ZIFs. The employment of meta-soluble Co-doped basic zinc acetate (Co-BZA), which shows a sustained-release effect in solvents, allows for the control of the solubility of Co-BZA in solvents.
