Background And Study Aims: Infections are a recognized risk of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). This paper reports on a large outbreak of VIM-2-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa that was linked to the use of a recently introduced duodenoscope with a specific modified design (Olympus TJF-Q180V).

Methods: Epidemiological investigations and molecular typing were executed in order to identify the source of the outbreak.

Background: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a rare severe unilateral facial pain condition. Current guidelines in trigeminal neuralgia management recommend sodium channel blockers--carbamazepine or oxcarbazepine--as the first-line treatment. However, the currently available drugs are often associated with poor tolerability resulting in sub-optimal pain control.

Objectives: In fibroscopic intubation, the fact of achieving a direct view in real time does not guarantee the correct advance of the endotracheal tube (ET) to its intratracheal position. The use of oral cannulas helps in achieving a free airway in order to pass the fibroscope and the ET. This study compares the VAMA(®) (V) and Berman(®) (B) cannulas as regards the time required for the intubation, fibroscopic view, and the ease in positioning the ET.

An in vitro investigation of the effect of bevel design on the penetration and withdrawal forces of dental needles.

J Dent

February 2013

Centre for Oral Health Research, School of Dental Sciences, Newcastle University, Framlington Place, Newcastle Upon Tyne NE 2 4BW, UK.

Objectives: To compare the effect on insertion and withdrawal forces using needles with a standard atraumatic bevel to those with a novel asymmetrical bevel in vitro.

Methods: Maximum needle penetration forces were measured using a 10N load cell mounted on an Instron universal testing machine. Forces were determined during insertion through a 0.
