Objective:: To determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and the hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype (HW) in a representative adolescent sample; as well as to establish which anthropometric indicator better identifies MS and HW, according to gender and adolescent age.
Methods:: This cross sectional study had the participation of 800 adolescents (414 girls) from 10-19 years old. Anthropometric indicators (body mass index, waist perimeter, waist/stature ratio, waist/hip ratio, and central/peripheral skinfolds) were determined by standard protocols. For diagnosis of MS, the criteria proposed by de Ferranti et al. (2004) were used. HW was defined by the simultaneous presence of increased waist perimeter (>75th percentile for age and sex) and high triglycerides (>100 mg/dL). The ability of anthropometric indicators was evaluated by Receiver Operating Characteristic curve.
Results:: The prevalence of MS was identical to HW (6.4%), without differences between genders and the adolescence phases. The waist perimeter showed higher area under the curve for the diagnosis of MS, except for boys with 17-19 years old, for whom the waist/stature ratio exhibited better performance. For diagnosing HW, waist perimeter also showed higher area under the curve, except for boys in initial and final phases, in which the waist/stature ratio obtained larger area under the curve. The central/peripheral skinfolds had the lowest area under the curve for the presence of both MS and HW phenotype.
Conclusions:: The waist perimeter and the waist/stature showed a better performance to identify MS and HW in both genders and in all three phases of adolescence.

Background: While the associations between pediatric non-obese metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and multiple diagnostic biomarkers are well-established, the role of a broader range of blood-based, urine-based, and body composition-based biomarkers for monitoring MAFLD are needed.
Methods: A pediatric cohort was established in Wuxi, China. We measured body composition biomarkers, blood-based and urine-based biomarkers, and liver stiffness in participants to diagnose MAFLD and identify alternative and novel potential biomarkers for MAFLD.

This study aims to investigate the responses of shield tunnel structures subjected to disturbances caused by bilateral pit excavation, and it systematically reveals for the first time the impact mechanism of bilateral pit excavation on the distribution of perimeter pressure and deformation patterns of shield tunnels. Using a bilateral pit excavation project in Nanjing as a case study, this research establishes methods for calculating longitudinal displacement and circumferential pressure of tunnels under bilateral pit excavation conditions, employing the image source method for analysis. A refined three-ring segment model is developed, and the load structure method is used to analyze the impact of deep foundation excavation on the tunnel located between the two excavation sites.

Background: To use the three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound for assessment of pelvic floor muscle function in non-diabetic females with insulin resistance (IR), and to evaluate its functional relationship with insulin levels.
Methods: From October 2022 to November 2023, 216 non-diabetic females with insulin-resistant (IR group) and 118 normal females (control group) were sequentially recruited from our hospital for our study. The 3D ultrasound was used to assess the levator hiatus in resting state for all females regarding diameter lines, perimeters and areas; as well as the Valsalva manoeuvre (VM).

Objective: To assess diet quality and its association with body and biochemical parameters in patients who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB).
Methods: Prospective observational study with individuals of both sexes subjected to RYGB. Body composition, biochemical parameters, and diet quality were assessed before and six months after RYGB.
Purpose: This study aimed to: (i) analyze the changes in physical fitness and body composition following a 4-month intervention of small-sided games (SSG) training; and (ii) analyze the association between internal and external training loads and the observed changes in physical fitness and body composition among sedentary young adults.
Methods: Sixty sedentary individuals (males: 30; females: 30) participated in this randomized controlled trial study. Physical fitness and body composition parameters were assessed at the 1st, 8th weeks, and 16th weeks after a SSG intervention.
