Background: No drug has been shown to be effective in preventing cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI). In different clinical settings, sodium-glucose transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors confer renal protection and may be promising drug candidates. We examined the association between preoperative dapagliflozin use and the incidence and prognosis of CSA-AKI.

A Clinical Drug as the Three-Photon Fluorescence Probe for In Vivo Microscopic Imaging of Mouse Kidney.

Three-photon fluorescence (3PF) microscopy encounters significant challenges in biological research and clinical applications, primarily due to the limited availability of high-performance probes. We took a shortcut by exploring the excellent 3PF property of berberine hydrochloride (BH), a clinically utilized drug derived from the traditional Chinese medicine, Coptis. Capitalizing on its renal metabolism characteristics, we employed BH for in vivo 3PF microscopic imaging of the mouse kidney.

Ethylene glycol (C₂H₆O₂), a toxic alcohol commonly found in automotive antifreeze, de-icing solutions, and industrial coolants, can cause severe toxicity when ingested. Due to its sweet taste, it is often consumed accidentally or intentionally, leading to life-threatening consequences such as metabolic acidosis, acute kidney injury (AKI), and mortality. Prompt diagnosis and early treatment with antidotes such as fomepizole or ethanol, combined with hemodialysis, are essential in preventing severe outcomes.

Acute necrotizing otitis media is a severe middle ear infection which causes necrosis of the tympanic cavity. A 54-year-old female was presented who suffered from diabetes mellitus and end-stage renal disease presenting with severe otalgia, initially thought to be necrotizing otitis externa. She rapidly progressed to total necrosis of the tympanic membrane.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) mainly affects the respiratory tract, but different organs may be involved including the kidney. Data on acute kidney injury (AKI) in critical forms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are scarce. We aimed to assess the incidence, risk factors and prognostic impact of AKI complicating critical forms of COVID-19.
