Unlike the precise structural control typical of closed assemblies, curbing the stacking of disc- and ring-shaped molecules is quite challenging. Here we report the discrete stacking of rigid aromatic oligoamide macrocycles 1. With increasing concentration, the aggregation of 1 quickly plateaus, forming a discrete oligomer, as suggested by 1D (1)H, 2D nuclear Overhauser effect, and diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy. Quantum-chemical calculations indicate that the tetramer of 1 is the most stable among oligomeric stacks. X-ray crystallography revealed a tetrameric stack containing identical molecules adopting two different conformations. With a defined length and an inner pore capable of accommodating distinctly different guests, the tetramers of 1 densely pack into 2D layers. Besides being a rare system of conformation-regulated supramolecular oligomerization, the discrete stacks of 1, along with their higher-order assemblies, may offer new nanotechnological applications.

In this study, we utilized a discrete point configuration method in conjunction with genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) to design broadband polarization-maintaining anti-resonant fibers (PM-ARFs). The resulting structure features a confinement loss (CL) below 0.17 dB/m, birefringence of approximately 8.

Membrane separation technology has emerged as a highly energy-efficient method for microalgae enrichment and harvesting in wastewater treatment. However, membrane fouling caused by algal cells and stratified extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) remains a critical barrier to its industrial-scale application. This study meticulously investigates the micro process of algae-derived pollutants stacking to the membrane surface affected by stratified EPS.

Phased structures for lossless ion manipulation offer significant improvements over the scanning second gate method for coupling with ion trap mass analyzers. With an experimental run time of under 1 min for select conditions and an average run time of less than 4 min, this approach significantly reduces experimental time while enhancing the temporal duty cycle. The outlined SLIM system connects to an ion trap mass analyzer via a PCB stacked ring ion guide, which replaces the commercial ion optics and capillary inlet.

The simulation of additive manufacturing has become a prominent research area in the past decade. Process physics simulations are employed to replicate laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) manufacturing processes, aiming to predict potential issues through simulated data. This study focuses on calculating surface roughness by utilizing 3D surface topology extracted from simulated data, as surface roughness significantly influences part quality.

Red emission in crystals has been observed with an ultra-small-single-benzenic -fluorophore () with a molecular weight (MW) of only 197 Da, bettering the literature report of fluorophores with the lowest MW = 252 Da. Supramolecular extensive hydrogen-bonding and J-aggregate type centrosymmetric discrete-dimers or a 1D chain of s led to red emission ( = 610-636 nm) in crystals. Unlike in the solution phase showing one absorption band, in thin films and in crystals the transition from the S state to both the S state and S state becomes feasible.
