Objective: The aim of the study was to analyze the microbial colonization rate as well as the spectrum and number of microorganisms in relation to the indwelling time of pancreatic stents.

Methods: Forty pancreatic stents were prepared according to a standardized protocol and subsequently sonicated to optimize bacterial release from the biofilm on the stents.

Results: Two hundred forty-six microorganisms were identified. Thirty-nine of 40 stents were colonized with microorganisms. Aerobic gram-positive microorganisms (106/246 [43%]) accounted for the greatest proportion. The predominant microorganisms were Streptococcus species (46/246 [19%]), which were isolated from 27 (68%) of 40 stents. Stents with a short indwelling time (3-13 days) were mainly colonized with aerobic gram-positive bacteria (82%) and Candida species (63%). In contrast, anaerobes (P < 0.01, 69% vs 18%) and aerobic gram-negative microorganisms (P < 0.01, 93% vs 45%) such as Enterobacteriaceae (P < 0.01, 86% vs 27%) were significantly more present on stents with a long indwelling time (29-93 days), compared with stents with a short indwelling time.

Conclusions: Microbial analysis of pancreatic duct stents revealed a very high colonization rate. Furthermore, the spectrum and number of microorganisms altered with the indwelling time of the stent. However, clinical relevance of our findings remains unclear.

Objective And Rationale: Children's clinical pain phenotypes are complex, and there is a lack of objective biological diagnostic markers and cognitive patterns. Detecting physiological signals through wearable devices simplifies disease diagnosis and holds the potential for remote medical applications.

Method And Results: This research established a pain recognition model based on AI skin potential (SP) signal analysis.

Background: Postoperative gastroparesis syndrome (PGS) is a common postoperative complication characterized by epigastralgia, nausea, and vomiting. Acupuncture is widely used to aid recovery, but its efficacy and safety have not been systematically evaluated.

Method: We retrieved randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using acupuncture as the primary intervention from six databases.

Objectives: Vascular access thrombosis (VAT) is a common complication in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), significantly impacting hemodialysis efficacy and patient survival. Currently, temporary dialysis access is typically established deep vein catheterization (VC), however, this method is highly invasive and associated with risks of infection and other complications. This study aims to explore the feasibility of using direct anastomosis indwelling needle puncture (DAINP) for temporary dialysis access.

Bifurcating Method for Subcutaneous Indwelling of Nonabsorbable Threads.

Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open

January 2025

From the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Keio University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan.

Subcutaneous indwelling of nonabsorbable threads for tissue fixation and tension reduction is often used in plastic surgery and is applied in breast reduction surgery, umbilicoplasty, and in frontalis muscle lifting for congenital ptosis. However, in a few cases, exposure of the indwelling thread necessitates its removal. Exposure of the indwelling threads mostly occurs due to exposure of the knots.

Objective: This study investigated the efficacy of comprehensive management and predictable inflammatory markers for idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (iRPF)-related hydronephrosis outcomes.

Methods: Patients with iRPF-related hydronephrosis underwent surgical (ureteral stent and/or nephrostomy tube placement) and medical (corticosteroid-based multiple immunosuppressants) management were classified according to stent-indwelling outcomes. Univariate analysis of clinical profiles was conducted to screen possible predictors of hydronephrosis remission.
