Introduction: Cholesterol-lowering therapy has been related with several pleiotropic effects including anti-inflammatory action in vascular endothelium; however, their influence on monocyte adhesion molecules is poorly described.
Aims: To investigate the effect of inhibitors of synthesis (statins) and absorption (ezetimibe) of cholesterol on expression of adhesion molecules L-selectin, PSGL-1, VLA-4, LFA-1, and Mac-1 in mononuclear cells in vivo and in vitro using THP-1 cells.
Methods: The influence of simvastatin (10 mg/day), ezetimibe (10 mg/day), and their combination (10 mg each/day) on mRNA expression of adhesion molecules was analyzed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from hypercholesterolemics. The effects of atorvastatin, simvastatin, and ezetimibe on mRNA and protein expression of adhesion molecules were also evaluated in THP-1 cells.
Results: Simvastatin/ezetimibe combination, but not the monotherapies, reduced the mRNA expression of the PSGL-1, LFA-1, and Mac-1 genes in PBMC from hypercholesterolemics. Total and LDL cholesterol in serum correlated with PSGL-1 mRNA expression, whereas HDL cholesterol negatively correlated with mRNA levels of L-selectin and VLA-4 genes (P < 0.05). Plasma hsCRP was also correlated with mRNA levels of VLA-4, LFA-1, and Mac-1 (P < 0.05). Atorvastatin and simvastatin at 10 μM reduced mRNA and protein expression of L-selectin, PSGL-1, and VLA-4 in THP-1 cells (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: Cholesterol-lowering therapy modulates gene expression of adhesion molecules in PBMC from hypercholesterolemics and THP-1 cells. Simvastatin/ezetimibe combination gives more benefits by reducing to a larger extent the expression of adhesion molecules in mononuclear cells.

Glycoproteins, which are involved in numerous biological functions, are among the most critical functional ingredients in an edible bird's nest (EBN). To gain a comprehensive understanding of the glycoprotein species within EBN, a label-free, site-specific glycoproteomic approach was used to analyze their N-glycoproteins, N-glycopeptides, and N-glycans systematically. A total of 127 N-glycoproteins were identified in EBN, of which 72 were found in house-EBN and 63 in cave-EBN, yielding 4195 and 5649 glycopeptides, respectively.

Materials And Methods: 103 patients with new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) were included in the study. Based on the data of multispiral computed tomography (CT) of the chest organs, all patients were divided into 3 groups: CT group 1 - 30 patients, CT group 2 - 62 patients and CT group 3 - 11 patients.

Persistent oxidative stress following bone defects significantly impedes the repair of bone tissue. Designing an antioxidative hydrogel with a suitable mechanical strength can help alter the local microenvironment and promote bone defect healing. In this work, α-lipoic acid (LA), a natural antioxidant small molecule, was chemically cross-linked with lipoic acid-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, = 6k or 10k) in sodium bicarbonate solution, to prepare LA-PEG hydrogels (LP, = 6k or 10k).

Introduction: ICAM-1 is an adhesion molecule expressed on the endothelial cells and is involved in regulating leukocyte recruitment to the site of inflammation. Elevated ICAM-1 mRNA expression was found in the serum of mothers with chorioamnionitis. This study aimed to determine the expression of ICAM-1 in the placenta and umbilical cord of pregnancy with chorioamnionitis, and its association with adverse neonatal outcome.

CD8 subunit alpha (CD8A) is an important gene in immunity and is involved in the functional regulation of T lymphocytes. However, the specific role and regulatory mechanism of CD8A in chicken T lymphocytes remain unknown. In this study, we overexpressed and interfered with CD8A in chicken T lymphocytes and found that interfering with CD8A expression inhibited the proliferation and induced the apoptosis of T lymphocytes and that the overexpression of CD8A promoted T lymphocyte activation.
