The left internal thoracic artery (LITA) is considered the most reliable coronary artery bypass grafting conduit due to its high rate of long-term patency. LITA grafts are extremely durable and associated complications are infrequent. We present a case with spontaneous spiral dissection of a LITA graft to the left anterior descending artery, which was assessed by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). OCT was superior in visualizing the disrupted flap, false lumen, and intramural hematoma, but it did not visualize the full extent of the vessel wall. In contrast, IVUS allowed more complete and deeper vessel visualization, and thus better appreciation of the extent of intramural hematoma. Combined use of these two modalities provides complementary details on imaging of a LITA dissection.

Studies in humans and rodents show exercise in pregnancy can modulate maternal blood pressure, vascular volume, and placental efficiency, but whether exercise affects early uteroplacental vascular adaptations is unknown. To investigate this, CBA/J female mice mated with BALB/c males to generate healthy uncomplicated pregnancies (BALB/c-mated) or mated with DBA/2J males to generate abortion-prone pregnancies (DBA/2J-mated), were subjected to treadmill exercise (5 days/week, 10 m/min, 30 min/day for 6 weeks before and throughout pregnancy), or remained sedentary. In uncomplicated pregnancies, exercise caused symmetric fetal growth restriction in fetuses evidenced by reductions in fetal weight, crown-to-rump length, abdominal girth and biparietal diameter.

To encode continuous sound stimuli, the inner hair cell (IHC) ribbon synapses utilize calcium-binding proteins (CaBPs), which reduce the inactivation of their Ca1.3 calcium channels. Mutations in the gene underlie non-syndromic autosomal recessive hearing loss DFNB93.

Neural diversity can expand the encoding capacity of a circuitry. A striking example of diverse structure and function is presented by the afferent synapses between inner hair cells (IHCs) and spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) in the cochlea. Presynaptic active zones at the pillar IHC side activate at lower IHC potentials than those of the modiolar side that have more presynaptic Ca channels.

The mammalian auditory system encodes sounds with subtypes of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) that differ in sound level sensitivity, permitting discrimination across a wide range of levels. Recent work suggests the physiologically-defined SGN subtypes correspond to at least three molecular subtypes. It is not known how information from the different subtypes converges within the cochlear nucleus.
