Human endocrine cell differentiation and islet morphogenesis play critical roles in determining islet cell mass and function, but the events and timeline of these processes are incompletely defined. To better understand early human islet cell development and maturation, we collected 115 pediatric pancreata and mapped morphological and spatiotemporal changes from birth through the first ten years of life. Using quantitative analyses and a combination of complementary tissue imaging approaches, including confocal microscopy and whole-slide imaging, we developed an integrated model for endocrine cell formation and islet architecture, including endocrine cell type heterogeneity and abundance, endocrine cell proliferation, and islet vascularization and innervation.

Graves' disease diagnosed nearly six months after microwave ablation of benign thyroid nodules: a case report.

BMC Endocr Disord

January 2025

Department of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases, The First People's Hospital of Changzhou, The Third Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, No. 185, Juqian Street, Changzhou, 213000, Jiangsu, China.

Background: Microwave ablation is a new, minimally invasive technique for the treatment of thyroid nodules. Hyperthyroidism due to destructive thyroiditis is a known risk of microwave ablation, though it occurs in only a minority of cases. We report a rare case of a patient diagnosed with Graves' disease nearly six months after undergoing microwave ablation of a thyroid nodule.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is a rare autosomal dominant disease with an estimated prevalence of 2 per 100,000. This disease is caused by a mutation in the tumor suppressor gene MEN1, which is located on chromosome 11 and codifies the menin protein. It is characterized by a predisposition of parathyroids, enteropancreatic, and anterior pituitary tumors, affecting the quality of life and lifespan of those who have the disease.

Extended Live Imaging of Female Drosophila melanogaster Germline Stem Cell Niches.

J Vis Exp

December 2024

Departamento de Genética, Facultad de Biología, Universidad de Sevilla;

Article Synopsis
  • Live imaging techniques provide real-time analysis of dynamic cellular processes in organisms, specifically studying the Drosophila ovary for various developmental phenomena like cell division and differentiation.
  • A new extended ex vivo culture method has been developed for live imaging of female Drosophila germline stem cell (GSC) niches, allowing visualization of GSC asymmetric division and changes in spectrosome morphology.
  • A detailed protocol is presented for this ex vivo culture, making it easier to study GSCs with various fluorescent tags commonly used in Drosophila research.

Central Pancreatectomy as a Surgical Alternative for Parenchyma Preservation.

Cureus

December 2024

Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago, CHL.

Pancreatoduodenectomy and distal pancreatectomy are standard treatments for various pancreatic pathologies. These procedures involve radical resection and a significant loss of pancreatic tissue, which can lead to exocrine and/or endocrine pancreatic insufficiency. In selected cases of benign tumors or those with low malignant potential, central pancreatectomy can be performed with acceptable morbidity and mortality rates.
