Introduction/objectives: Inherited or acquired arrhythmic disorders and cardiac disease have been associated with sudden cardiac death (SCD) in dogs. The electrical mechanism related to death in most of these cases is unknown. This retrospective study aimed to describe arrhythmic events in dogs that experienced SCD during Holter monitoring.

Background: Prehospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation has commonly been considered ineffective in traumatic cardiopulmonary arrest because traditional chest compressions do not produce substantial cardiac output. However, recent evidence suggests that chest compressions located over the left ventricle (LV) produce greater hemodynamics when compared to traditional compressions. We hypothesized that chest compressions located directly over the LV would result in an increase in return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and hemodynamic variables, when compared to traditional chest compressions, in a swine model of traumatic pulseless electrical activity (PEA).

Cardiac Arrest Upon Induction of General Anesthesia.

Anesth Prog

March 2021

Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Anesthesiology, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.

There are numerous causes of cardiac arrest in the perioperative period, including hypoxia, hypovolemia, and vagal response to medications or procedures during routine anesthetics. Initiation of adequate cardiopulmonary resuscitation, administration of epinephrine, and application of a defibrillator, with shocking when applicable, are all essential steps in achieving return of spontaneous circulation. Knowledge and utilization of monitoring equipment can alert the provider to problems leading to cardiac arrest as well as ensure proper resuscitative efforts during the event.

Background: There currently are no well-defined animal models for traumatic pulseless electrical activity (PEA). Our objective was to develop a swine model of traumatic PEA that would be useful for laboratory research where mortality is an outcome of interest. In this pilot study, we hypothesized that animals that remained in PEA without intervention for a longer period would have increased mortality.

Ambulatory Ventricular Assist Device Patient Management.

Cardiol Clin

November 2018

Advanced Heart Failure/Mechanical Circulatory Support, INOVA Fairfax Hospital, 3300 Gallows Road, Falls Church, VA 22042, USA. Electronic address:

Understanding the ventricular assist device (VAD) patient pump interface and developing expertise in monitoring patients with a VAD are the goals of care in the ambulatory setting. The objective is to improve long-term outcomes. The purpose of expert, focused, routine outpatient surveillance is to facilitate the integration of pulseless, electrically dependent VAD patients into the community.
