As part of the CMV and Hearing Multicenter Screening (CHIMES) study, 72,239 newborns were screened for cytomegalovirus by rapid culture and real-time PCR of saliva samples. Of the 266 infants with congenital cytomegalovirus infection, discordance between rapid culture and PCR was observed in 14 children, and 13 were identified only by PCR, demonstrating the superiority of the PCR assay.

Phenotypic Plasticity During Organofluorine Degradation Revealed by Adaptive Evolution.

Microb Biotechnol

December 2024

Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics and Biotechnology Institute, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, USA.

A major factor limiting the biodegradation of organofluorine compounds has been highlighted as fluoride anion toxicity produced by defluorinating enzymes. Here, two highly active defluorinases with different activities were constitutively expressed in Pseudomonas putida ATCC 12633 to examine adaption to fluoride stress. Each strain was grown on α-fluorophenylacetic acid as the sole carbon source via defluorination to mandelic acid, and each showed immediate fluoride release and delayed growth.

This systematic review study examines the relationship between language development, executive function, and screen time in early childhood. The early childhood period is a crucial phase for the development of the brain, during which fundamental language and executive function skills undergo rapid evolution. This review synthesizes findings from 14 peer-reviewed studies that focused on language development, executive function, and screen time together to provide a comprehensive understanding of their relationship.

Geography, Trajectories, and Controls of Coastal Water Quality: More Rapid Improvement in the Shallow Zone of the Chesapeake Bay.

Environ Sci Technol

December 2024

U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Chesapeake Bay Program, 1750 Forest Drive, Suite 130, Annapolis, Maryland 21401, United States.

Many coastal ecosystems have suffered from cultural eutrophication and dead zones. In the Chesapeake Bay, water quality degradation is manifested in low dissolved oxygen, poor water clarity, and decreased submerged aquatic vegetation acreage. This research combines long-term monitoring data, science-based assessment methods, and novel data analysis approaches (i.

Air-conditioning systems, composed mainly of humidity control and heat reallocation units, play a pivotal role in upholding superior air quality and human well-being across diverse environments ranging from international space stations and pharmacies to granaries and cultural relic preservation sites, and to commercial and residential buildings. The adoption of sorbent water as the working pair and low-grade renewable or waste heat in adsorption-driven air-conditioning presents a state-of-the-art solution, notably for its energy efficiency and eco-friendliness vis-à-vis conventional electricity-driven vapor compression cycles. Here, we introduce a rational π-extension strategy to engineer an ultrarobust and highly porous zirconium metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF).
