Dating of sediments from four Swiss prealpine lakes with (210)Pb determined by gamma-spectrometry: progress and problems.

Published: July 2015

In this paper the most important problems in dating lake sediments with unsupported (210)Pb are summarized and the progress in gamma-spectrometry of the unsupported (210)Pb is discussed. The main topics of these studies concern sediment samples preparation for gamma-spectrometry, measurement techniques and data analysis, as well as understanding of accumulation and sedimentation processes in lakes. The vertical distributions of artificial ((137)Cs, (241)Am, (239)Pu) and natural radionuclides ((40)K, (210,214)Pb, (214)Bi) as well as stable trace elements (Fe, Mn, Pb) in sediment cores from four Swiss lakes were used as examples for the interpretation, inter-comparison and validation of depth-age relations established by three (210)Pb-based models (CF-CSR, CRS and SIT). The identification of turbidite layers and the influence of the turbidity flows on the accuracy of sediment dating is demonstrated. Time-dependent mass sedimentation rates in lakes Brienz, Thun, Biel and Lucerne are discussed and compared with published data.

Chemical availability of fallout radionuclides in cryoconite.

J Environ Radioact

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Plymouth, Plymouth, UK.

Atmospheric deposition on glaciers is a major source of legacy fallout radionuclides (FRNs) accumulating in cryoconite, a dark granular material with surface properties that efficiently bind FRN contaminants (specifically Cs; Pb; Am). Cryoconite-bound FRNs in glaciers can be released when they interact with and are transported by glacial meltwater, resulting in the discharge of amassed particulate contaminants into aquatic and terrestrial environments downstream. The environmental consequences of FRN release from the cryosphere are poorly understood, including impacts of cryoconite-sourced FRNs for alpine food chains.

Pb-based dating of recent sediments with the χ-mapping version of the Constant Sediment Accumulation Rate (CSAR) model.

J Environ Radioact

Departamento de Física Aplicada I, Universidad de Sevilla, Spain. Electronic address:

The Pb-based method aims at determining the absolute age of recent sediments on the centennial scale. A family of models assumes that at the sediment-water interface the flux of unsupported Pb (Pb), F, relates to its initial activity concentration, A, and the mass sedimentation rate, w, as: F=Aw. Additional specific assumptions that allow for analytical formulations of the models are: i) constant A (CIC), constant F (CF), and constant F with constant w (CFCS).

Distribution and storage of uranium, and its decay products, in floodplain sediments.

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Portland Square, Plymouth University, Drake Circus, Plymouth, PL4 8AA, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

Industrialised rivers contain legacy contaminants stored in their sediments and floodplain soils which may inhibit attainment of environmental quality criteria. The River Fal catchment, SW England, is impacted by inputs from uranium mining and clay production and serves as an exemplar for understanding the consequences of medium-term process dynamics in contaminated basins. Radionuclides were determined, by gamma spectroscopy, in six cores from the river floodplain with the aim of quantifying the activities of U, and its decay products, and the bomb fallout radionuclidesCs and Am.

Limited data exists on the contribution to radiological dose to members of the public from ingestion of radioactivity in seafood in the Australian diet. There is also a lack of data available to assess the radiological dose to marine fauna in Australian waters. Natural and anthropogenic radionuclides and trace metals were measured in the edible flesh of prawns to determine the radiological dose to humans.

This work presents a piece of initial information about the estimation of the sedimentation rate for Lake Pykara. In this investigation, a chronological sequence of sediment core was set up dependent on Cs and Pb analysis to study sediment accumulation rates in Lake Pykara. Caesium-137 (Cs) is an artificial radionuclide and is regularly utilized in building up the chronology of lake sediments in the Anthropocene period.
