The nervous system plays a vital role throughout the entire lifecycle and it may regulate the formation, development and metastasis of tumors. Small cell lung cancer is a typical neuroendocrine tumor, and it is naturally equipped with neurotropism. In this review, we firstly summarize current preclinical and clinical evidence to demonstrate the reciprocal crosstalk among the nervous system, tumor, and tumor microenvironment in various ways, including neurotransmitter-receptor pathways, innervations of nerve fibers, different types of synapse formation by neurons, astrocytes, and cancer cells, neoneurogenesis.

ZnO-Nafion assisted optical fiber dual-SPR biosensor for simultaneous detection of urea and uric acid concentrations.

Biosens Bioelectron

December 2024

College of Information Science and Engineering, Northeastern University, Shenyang, 110819, China; Hebei Key Laboratory of Micro-Nano Precision Optical Sensing and Measurement Technology, Qinhuangdao, 066004, China.

A novel dual-parameter optical fiber biosensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) for simultaneous measurement of urea and uric acid concentrations is proposed in this paper. Based on the principle of positive and negative electric combination, ZnO nanoparticles is selected as the matrix for immobilizing urease and uricase with selective recognition ability, which can also be used as a sensitizing material to increase the refractive index detection sensitivity of SPR by 22%. Then, Nafion ion exchange membrane was introduced to wrap the urea sensing area to avoid crosstalk caused by the overlap of adjacent sensing areas.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD), one of the most prevalent microvascular complications of diabetes, arises from dysregulated glucose and lipid metabolism induced by hyperglycemia, resulting in the deterioration of renal cells such as podocytes and tubular epithelial cells. Programmed cell death (PCD), comprising apoptosis, autophagy, ferroptosis, pyroptosis, and necroptosis, represents a spectrum of cell demise processes intricately governed by genetic mechanisms in vivo. Under physiological conditions, PCD facilitates the turnover of cellular populations and serves as a protective mechanism to eliminate impaired podocytes or tubular epithelial cells, thereby preserving renal tissue homeostasis amidst hyperglycemic stress.

Industrial digital radiographic image denoising based on improved KBNet.

J Xray Sci Technol

December 2024

Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

Industrial digital radiography (DR) images are essential for industrial inspections, but they often suffer from strong scatter, cross-talk, electronic noise, and other factors that affect image quality. The presence of non-zero mean noise and neighborhood correlation loss in 1D array scanning poses significant challenges for denoising. To enhance the denoising process of industrial DR images and address the issues of low resolution and noise, we propose an improved KBNet (iKBNet) that incorporates lightweight modifications and introduces novel elements to the original KBNet.

Nowadays, metasurfaces have attracted considerable attention due to their promising and advanced control of electromagnetic (EM) waves. However, it is still challenging to shape guided waves into desired free-space mode, while simultaneously manipulating spatial incident waves using a single metasurface. Herein, a class of metasurfaces capable of multiplexing guided and space waves is proposed to achieve advanced EM functionalities in microwave regions, which can find great application potentials in radar systems, wireless communications, and wireless power transfer (WPT).
