Ethidium bromide-induced demyelination of the sciatic nerve of adult Wistar rats.

Braz J Med Biol Res

January 2002

Departamento de Patologia Animal, Faculdade de Veterinária, Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Capão do Leão, RS, Brasil.

Peripheral nerve ultrastructure was assessed after single or multiple local injections of the intercalating dye ethidium bromide. Thirty-four adult Wistar rats of both sexes were divided into five groups and maintained in a controlled environment with rat chow and water ad libitum throughout the experiment. The experimental animals were injected with 1 microl of 0.

Motoneuronal output and gradation of effort in attempts to contract acutely paralysed leg muscles in man.

J Physiol

November 1993

Department of Clinical Neurophysiology, Prince Henry Hospital and Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.

1. The study was designed to determine the degree to which normal subjects can control motoneurones innervating a leg muscle when acutely deprived of muscle afferent feedback. Microneurographic recordings were made from eighteen motor fascicles in the common peroneal nerve, of which thirteen innervated tibialis anterior and five toe dorsiflexor muscles.

Immunologically incompatible sciatic nerve grafts were inserted into the severed sciatic nerves of Wistar rats. In an attempt to induce graft tolerance, low-dose cyclosporin A (CsA) was administered to some animals for 20 weeks, then gradually withdrawn. Behavioural, electrophysiological and histological studies indicated that some degree of regeneration took place in all animals regardless of treatment.

The formation of collagen fibrils, fibril bundles, and tissue-specific collagen macroaggregates by chick embryo tendon fibroblasts was studied using conventional and high voltage electron microscopy. During chick tendon morphogenesis, there are at least three extracellular compartments responsible for three levels of matrix organization: collagen fibrils, bundles, and collagen macroaggregates. Our observations indicate that the initial extracellular events in collagen fibrillogenesis occur within narrow cytoplasmic recesses, presumably under close cellular regulation.
