We studied electronic change in oligothiophenes by employing o-carborane into a molecular array in which one or both end(s) were substituted by electron-withdrawing dicyano-vinyl group(s). Depending on mono- or bis-substitution at the o-carborane, a series of linear A1-D-A2 (1a-1c) or V-shaped A1-D-A2-D-A1 (2a-2c) oligothiophene chain structures of variable length were prepared; A1, D, and A2, represent dicyano-vinyl, oligothiophenyl, and o-carboranyl groups, respectively. Among this series, 2a shows strong electron-acceptor capability of o-carborane comparable to that of the dicyano-vinyl substituent, which can be elaborated by a conformational effect driven by cage σ*-π* interaction. As a result, electronic communications between o-carborane and dicyano-vinyl groups are successfully achieved in 2a.

The donor-acceptor (D-A) dye 4-(bis-4-(5-(2,2-dicyano-vinyl)-thiophene-2-yl)-phenyl-amino)-benzoic acid (P1) has been frequently used to functionalize NiO photocathodes and induce photoelectrochemical reduction of protons when coupled to a suitable catalyst. Photoinduced twisting of the P1 dye is steered on NiO by co-adsorption of tetradecanoic acid (C, myristic acid (MA)). Density Functional Theory and time-resolved photoluminescence studies confirm that twisting lowers the energy levels of the photoexcited D-A dye.

The level of HClO/ClO in mitochondria is essential to keep the normal function of mitochondria. Therefore, it is meaningful to accurately and quickly monitor ClO in mitochondria. In this work, a new triphenylamine-based fluorescence probe PDTPA was designed and synthesized, in which pyridinium salt and dicyano-vinyl group were introduced as mitochondria targeting site and reaction site for ClO.

An intramolecular charge transfer (ICT)-based fluorescent probe P-ONOO was synthesized to detect ONOO. After responding to peroxynitrite, the dicyano-vinyl group of P-ONOO generates the aldehyde group, emitting strong green fluorescence accompanied by quenching of the yellow fluorescence. According to the calculated Fukui function, the modification of the alkoxy group can enhance the f of P-ONOO, which can enhance the probe's nucleophilic addition reactivity with ONOO.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a serious neurodegenerative disease and is characterized by abnormal α-synuclein (α-syn) accumulation in Lewy bodies (LB) and Lewy neurites (LN), which makes α-syn an important imaging target for PD. An imaging probe that quantifies fibrillar α-syn can enhance the clinical diagnosis of PD and can also be used to evaluate the efficacy of therapeutics aimed at reducing the abnormal aggregation of the α-syn fibril in the brain. In this paper, we study the binding profile of fibrillar α-syn with a fluorescent probe 4-(dicyanovinyl)julolidine (DCVJ), which is being explored for identifying α-syn imaging agents.
