We have studied the uncatalyzed and Lewis acid (LA)-catalyzed cycloaddition reaction between tropone and 1,1-dimethoxyethene using dispersion-corrected relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The LA catalysts BF , B(C H ) , and B(C F ) efficiently accelerate both the competing [4+2] and [8+2] cycloaddition reactions by lowering the activation barrier up to 12 kcal mol compared to the uncatalyzed reaction. Our study reveals that the LA catalyst promotes both cycloaddition reaction pathways by LUMO-lowering catalysis and demonstrates that Pauli-lowering catalysis is not always the operative catalytic mechanism in cycloaddition reactions.

Two complementary regiodivergent Pd-catalyzed assisted tandem [isomerization/Heck arylation] reactions are reported. They provide access to a broad array of acyclic trisubstituted vinyl ethers starting from readily available alkenyl ethers. In both cases, the isomerization is conducted with a [Pd-H] precatalyst supported by tris--butyl phosphine ligands.

The asymmetric total synthesis of natural (+)-cannabisativine 1 was completed in 19 steps and 7% overall yield. The key synthetic intermediate 29 was prepared with a high degree of stereocontrol in 12 steps starting from chiral 1-acylpyridinium salt 10. Addition of zinc enolate 11 to pyridinium salt 10 furnished dihydropyridone 12 containing two contiguous stereocenters of the correct absolute configuration.
