A group of biodegradable alanine-derived gemini quaternary ammonium salts (bromides and chlorides) with various alkyl chains and spacer lengths was tested for anti-adhesive and anti-biofilm activity. The strongest antifungal activity was exhibited by bromides with 10 and 12 carbon atoms within hydrophobic chains (N,N'-bis(1-decyloxy-1-oxopronan-2-yl)-N,N,N',N'-tetramethylpropane-1,3-diammonium dibromide and N,N'-bis(1-dodecyloxy-1-oxopronan-2-yl)-N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethane-1,2-diammonium dibromide). It was also demonstrated that these gemini surfactants enhanced the sensitivity of Candida albicans to azoles (itraconazole and fluconazole) and polyenes (amphotericin B and nystatine). Gemini quaternary ammonium salts effectively inhibited fungal cell adhesion to polystyrene and silicone surface. These compounds reduced C. albicans filamentation and eradicated C. albicans and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa biofilms, as it was shown in crystal violet and fluorescent staining. None of the tested compounds were cytotoxic against yeast mitochondrial metabolism.

Efficient catalytic systems for various organic transformations in green solvents, especially water, are in great demand. Catalytically active bis-NHC complexes of palladium(II) based on imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid with different lipophilicities were obtained. The synthesis of imidazolium salts was complicated by the formation of side products of nucleophilic substitution by iodide ions in the Menshutkin reaction involving alkyl iodides, which was successfully resolved by using alkyl tosylates.

Herrin, three Gemini cationic surfactants related to benzo[d]thiazol-3-ium bromide with variable hydrocarbon chain lengths (TBC n = 6, 12, and 18) were synthesized successfully and confirmed by using IR and HNMR spectroscopies. Critical micelle concentration and different thermodynamic properties of all surfactants under study were measured using conductivity, density, molal volume, and refractive index techniques. The Critical micelle concentration of TBC 6, TBC 12, and TBC 18 surfactants measured from the different techniques shows an acceptable agreement.

In this paper, two triazine ring-containing quaternary ammonium salt Gemini surfactants (C-2-C and C-2-C) were synthesized. The minimum inhibitory concentrations against sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) of C-2-C, C-2-C and dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (1227) were determined using the double-dilution method. The performance of C-2-C and C-2-C in inhibiting carbon steel corrosion in the presence of SRB was examined, with 1227 serving as a control sample.

Gemini surfactants (GS) could serve as the drug carrier agents for the delivery of macromolecules due to the excellent properties and tuneable structures. Little attention has been paid to the impact of counterion change on GS and the interaction between GS and protein. In this work, ibuprofen (Ibu) replaced quaternary ammonium ion GS (GS-Ibu) with the hydrophobic chain length of 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 carbon atoms were prepared for the first-time using extraction technology.
