This article will discuss the experiences of two organizations who have driven process improvement through frontline ownership using the National Health Services' Releasing Time to Care (RTC) program. Through the implementation of RTC, frontline staff learn how to gather information from colleagues, stakeholders, and literature to design potential improvements.

Learning to hear again with alternating cochlear frequency allocations.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of ENT/Audiology & School for Mental Health and NeuroScience (MHENS), Maastricht University Medical Centre, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Traditionally, the place-pitch 'tonotopically' organized auditory neural pathway was considered to be hard-wired. Cochlear implants restore hearing by arbitrarily mapping frequency-amplitude information. This study shows that recipients, after a long period of sound deprivation, preserve a level of auditory plasticity, enabling them to swiftly and concurrently learn speech understanding with two alternating, distinct frequency maps.

Creation of root cause analysis and action (RCA) standard work by a multidisciplinary team to prevent harm, reduce bias, and improve safety culture.

J Healthc Risk Manag

December 2024

Division of Quality, Safety and Regulatory Affairs, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA.

This project aimed to (1) develop a multidisciplinary team to rapidly conduct event analysis, (2) create tools to standardize event communication, (3) expand resiliency support provided to staff, and (4) decrease cycle time between event occurrence and action implementation. A multidisciplinary team was created to investigate safety events. The team developed standard work including key stakeholder notification of the event, a huddle to facilitate immediate mitigation of risk, staff resiliency support, a consistent interview approach, analysis of investigation data, and an accountability meeting to ensure consensus on steps required to prevent future harm.

Upper thermal limits are 'hard-wired' across body mass but not populations of an estuarine fish.

Climate warming is seeing temperatures breach exceptional thresholds as the frequency and intensity of heat waves increase. Efforts to forecast species vulnerability to climate warming often focus on upper thermal limits threatening survival, overlooking the role of intraspecific variation in determining vulnerability. Using an estuarine fish (black bream, Acanthopagrus butcheri) as a model, we explore how intraspecific variation in body mass and among populations affects upper thermal tolerance.

Introduction: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension is a neurological condition characterized by a raised intracranial pressure and papilledema, leading to chronic headaches and visual disturbances. By recognizing modifiable risk factors and deploying evidence-based interventions, healthcare providers have the potential to mitigate the burden of the disease and improve patient outcomes.

Areas Covered: It is well known that the condition occurs in predominantly pre-menopausal females who live with obesity particularly in the context of recent weight gain.
