By implementing the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann theory in a cell model, we theoretically investigate the influence of polyelectrolye gel permeability on ion densities and pH deviations inside the cavities of ionic microcapsules. Our calculations show that variations in permeability of a charged capsule shell cause a redistribution of ion densities within the capsule, which ultimately affects the pH deviation and Donnan potential induced by the electric field of the shell. We find that semipermeable capsules can induce larger pH deviations inside their cavities that can permeable capsules. Furthermore, with increasing capsule charge, the influence of permeability on pH deviations progressively increases. Our theory, while providing a self-consistent method for modeling the influence of permeability on fundamental properties of ionic microgels, makes predictions of practical significance for the design of microcapsules loaded with fluorescent dyes, which can serve as biosensors for diagnostic purposes.

Coacervation based on liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) has been widely used for the preparation of artificial protocells and to mimic the dynamic organization of membrane-free organelles. Most complex synthetic coacervates are formed through electrostatic interactions but cannot withstand high ionic strength conditions (>0.1 M).

The microencapsulation of Lactocaseibacillus rhamnosus GG in a matrix of sodium alginate, xanthan gum, gum arabic and chitosan hydrochloride is a promising strategy for protecting this probiotic during passage through the gastrointestinal tract. This study evaluated the influence on the viability of Lactocaseibacillus rhamnosus GG encapsulated with these polymers by external ionic gelation with vibratory extrusion and the microcapsules that showed the best results of capsulation efficiency, viability, size and morphology were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal analysis (TGA) and exposure to environmental stress conditions and gastrointestinal simulation. The result revealed encapsulation efficiency values above 95 % for all formulations and survival rate higher than 6 log CFU/mL for most analyzed groups.

Background: Gut dysbiosis, chronic diseases, and microbial recurrent infections concerns have driven the researchers to explore phytochemicals from medicinal and food homologous plants to modulate gut microbiota, mitigate diseases, and inhibit pathogens. Gingerols have attracted attention as therapeutic agents due to their diverse biological activities like gut microbiome regulation, gastro-protective, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-oxidative effects.
Purpose: This review aimed to summarize the gingerols health-promoting potential, specifically focusing on the regulation of gut microbiome, attenuation of disease symptoms, mechanisms of action, and signaling pathways involved.

Encapsulation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that could evaporate at a defined rate is of immense interest for application in emission reference materials (ERMs). Polyurethane/polyurea microcapsules with various VOC active ingredients (limonene, pinene, and toluene) were successfully produced by interfacial polymerization with Shirasu porous glass membrane emulsification in a size range between 10 and 50 μm. The effect of surfactant, VOC, monomer(s) type, and ratio has a great effect on the formulation process and morphology of capsules.
