The prevalence of risk factors for osteoporosis in persons with epilepsy, patients' awareness of their risk, and their engagement in osteoprotective behaviors were assessed in this study. Two hundred and sixty patients with epilepsy (F=51.5%, average age=42) completed a survey tool. Of 106 patients with a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) result, 52% had low bone mineral density, and 11% had osteoporosis. The results suggest that the majority of patients with epilepsy do not engage in bone-protective behaviors. Those who have undergone a DXA scan may be more likely to take calcium and vitamin D supplementation compared with those who did not undergo a DXA scan, but they do not engage in other osteoprotective behaviors. Many patients did not accurately report their DXA results, indicating that better patient education is warranted.

Issue Addressed: The growing prevalence of osteoporosis requires preventative management starting from an early age as peak bone mass is typically reached by age 30. However, current Australian adolescents are not adequately addressing key osteoprotective factors. Alarmingly, around 17% have insufficient vitamin D levels, 55% consume insufficient dietary calcium, and 79% are insufficiently active.

Background: Chronic otitis media with or without cholesteatoma progresses with various degrees of bone resorption and remodeling. Estrogen mediates osteoprotective effects through the receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL) pathway, which is mainly mediated by estrogen receptor-alpha (ER-α).
Objectives: The present study investigated the expression patterns of receptor activator of NF-κB (RANK), osteoprotegerin (OPG), RANKL, and ER-α in pathological tissue from patients with chronic otitis media to determine the roles of those factors in osteolytic mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of chronic otitis media.

Unlabelled: Previous studies have revealed the protective effects of statins on bone but the association of statins use with osteoporosis-related measurement has shown controversial results. In this study, we found an age, dose andduration-dependent osteoprotective effect of statins in general older population.
Purpose: Previous studies have revealed the protective effects of statins on bone but the association of statins use with osteoporotic fractures has shown controversial results.

Semaphorin 3A (sema3A) is an osteoprotective factor that enhances bone formation while inhibiting osteoclast bone resorption. It is produced by rat calvarial osteoblasts cultured on grit-blasted/acid-etched microtextured (SLA) titanium surfaces at higher levels than on tissue culture polystyrene, suggesting that it may improve performance of titanium implants in vivo, particularly in conditions characterized by compromised bone quality. To test this, we established a clinically relevant type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) rat model and used a non-toxic click hydrogel that rapidly polymerizes in situ (GEL) to provide localized controlled delivery of sema3A.
