Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a debilitating condition that affects millions of people worldwide, yet there are currently no reliable biomarkers for its diagnosis. Alpha-synuclein aggregation is a well-known hallmark of PD pathology, but the behavior and kinetics of these aggregates are poorly understood. To address this gap in knowledge, this study utilized several approaches to evaluate the potential of alpha-synuclein aggregates as potential biomarker for PD.

Eutrophication caused by human activities has severely impacted freshwater ecosystems, leading to harmful cyanobacterial blooms that threaten water quality and ecosystem stability. During blooms, denitrification is a key process for nitrogen removal, which can occur both in the sediment and in the waterbody mediated by cyanobacterial aggregate (CA)-associated microorganisms. In this study, the structure, dynamics and assembly mechanisms of CA-associated nirK-, nirS-, and nosZ-encoding denitrifying communities were investigated in the eutrophic Lake Taihu across the bloom season.

Background: The distribution of hosts and parasitoids across patches is a key factor determining the dynamics of host-parasitoid populations. To connect behavioral rules with population dynamics, it is essential to comprehend how individual-level dispersal behavior influences the distribution of individuals. Typically, a simple deterministic model has been used to describe this connection.

Biomolecular sensors with single-molecule resolution are composed of multitudes of transducers that measure state changes related to single-molecular binding and unbinding events. Conventionally, signals are aggregated from many individual transducers in order to achieve sufficient statistics. However, by aggregating signals, transducer-to-transducer differences are lost and heterogeneities cannot be studied.

The construction of coarse-grained descriptions of a system's kinetics is well established in biophysics. One prominent example is Markov state models in protein folding dynamics. In this paper, we develop a coarse-grained, discrete state model of a self-aggregating colloidal particle system inspired by the concepts of Markov state modeling.
