Background: The aims of present study were to investigate the expression of Annexin A2 in the placenta of patients with preeclampsia (PE) and correlate these data with acute worsening of clinical symptoms.
Methods: Placentas were collected from uncomplicated normal pregnancies (n = 9), PE cases without emergency termination of pregnancy (group 1, n = 6), and PE cases with acute worsening of symptoms necessitating immediate pregnancy termination (group 2, n = 7). Immunohistochemistry data were analyzed quantitatively, and placental mRNA expression was measured by Real-time PCR.
Results: Group 2 had a significantly shorter interval between diagnosis and pregnancy termination compared with group 1 (p = 0.002). Birth weight and placental weight in group 2 were significantly lower compared with the normal group (p = 0.006 and p = 0.03, birth weight and placental weight, respectively), whereas there were no differences in gestational age at delivery between the three groups or the severity of high blood pressure and proteinuria between the PE groups. Placental expression of Annexin A2 as determined by immunohistochemistry was significantly higher in both PE groups compared with the uncomplicated pregnancy group (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, groups 1 and 2, respectively). Placental Annexin A2 mRNA expression was significantly elevated in group 2 compared with the normal group (p = 0.002) but did not change in group 1.
Conclusions: This study is the first to demonstrate increased placental Annexin A2 mRNA expression during the acute phase of PE. Immunohistochemical staining of placental Annexin A2 was high, regardless of PE phase. These findings suggest that worsening of PE might alter Annexin A2 expression at the transcription level.

Introduction: Short-term exposure to air pollution may worsen the course of ischemic heart disease (IHD), causing acute and chronic coronary syndromes.
Objectives: This study aimed to assess the risk of hospital admission due to chronic and acute coronary syndromes (ACS) after exposure to various air pollutants in Poland.
Methods: In this time-series study, the risk of hospital admission due to IHD over 3 days from exposure to several air pollutants was evaluated.

Anticoccidials, commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat coccidiosis in food-producing animals, particularly in poultry farming, are associated with potential environmental risks due to their excretion in manure and subsequent land-spreading. Diclazuril, a widely used anticoccidial, has been detected in groundwater, raising concerns about its impact on non-target species. This study investigates the developmental toxicity of diclazuril in zebrafish embryos over a 96-hour exposure period, utilizing biomarkers such as oxidative stress indicators and metabolomic profiles.

Objective: A significant number of patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) are not eligible for pulmonary endarterectomy and may be treated with balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA). Although BPA programs have recently been developed in Brazil, no results have yet been published. The objective of this study was to assess the clinical and hemodynamic progression of the first patients treated with BPA at our center.

Introduction: Sarcopenia, characterized by reduced skeletal muscle mass (RMM), is increasingly recognized as a significant factor influencing outcomes in various health conditions, including stroke. Although most studies focus on sarcopenia developing during stroke rehabilitation, the impact of sarcopenia present at the onset of acute ischemic stroke remains underexplored. This study aims to evaluate the effect of RMM at stroke onset on 3-month functional outcomes in acute ischemic stroke patients.

Background: Pediatric respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-related acute lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) commonly requires hospitalization. The Clinical Progression Scale Pediatrics (CPS-Ped) measures level of respiratory support and degree of hypoxia across a range of disease severity, but it has not been applied in infants hospitalized with severe RSV-LRTI.
Methods: We analyzed data from a prospective surveillance registry of infants hospitalized for RSV-related complications across 39 U.
