The magnetic and magnetothermal properties of holmium single crystal have been investigated from 4.2 to 300 K in magnetic fields up to 100 kOe using magnetization and heat capacity data measured along the easy magnetization direction, which is the crystallographic b-axis, i.e. [112¯0] direction. The magnetic phase diagram of Ho has been refined by examining data measured using a high purity single crystal.

Regrettably, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) remains the deadliest form of brain cancer, where the early diagnosis plays a pivotal role in the patient's therapy and prognosis. Hence, we report for the first time the design, synthesis, and characterization of new hybrid organic-inorganic stimuli-responsive nanoplexes (NPX) for bioimaging and killing brain cancer cells (GBM, U-87). These nanoplexes were built through coupling two nanoconjugates, produced using a facile, sustainable, green aqueous colloidal process ("bottom-up").

A High-Precision Real-Time Temperature Acquisition Method Based on Magnetic Nanoparticles.

Sensors (Basel)

December 2024

CAS State Key Laboratory of Forest and Management, Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang 110016, China.

The unique magnetothermal properties of magnetic nanoparticles enable the development of a high-precision, real-time, noninvasive temperature measurement method with significant potential in the biomedical field. Based on a low-frequency alternating magnetic field excitation model, we construct two additional magnetic field excitation models-alternating current-direct current superposition and dual-frequency superposition-to extract harmonic amplitude components from the magnetization response. To increase the accuracy of harmonic information acquisition, the effects of the truncation error, excitation magnetic field frequency, and amplitude are thoroughly analyzed, and optimal parameter values are selected to minimize the error.

Mild Magnetothermal Immunotherapy for Malignant Pleural Effusion.

Small

December 2024

Shanghai Institute of Ceramics Chinese Academy of Sciences, Research Unit of Nanocatalytic Medicine in Specific Therapy for Serious Disease, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (2021RU012), Shanghai, 200050, P. R. China.

Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) is one of the most difficult complications of cancer to cure, usually indicating poor prognosis in late-stage cancer patients. Due to the presence of a large number of tumor-associated immune cells with the tumor promoting phenotype in MPE and pleural tumors, current clinical therapy offers limited effectiveness. Here, a mild magnetothermal regulation strategy is proposed based on a magnetic nanocatlytic nanoplatform ZCMF@PEG-AF (ZCMF-AF) constructed by surface-modifying anti-F4/80 antibody (AF) on ZnCoFeO@ZnMnFeO magnetic nanoparticles (ZCMF) to target and polarize tumor-associated macrophages.

The design of heterojunctions offers a crucial solution for energy conversion and storage challenges, but current research predominantly focuses on charge transfer benefits, often neglecting spin attribute regulation despite the increasing recognition of spin-sensitivity in many chemical reactions. In this study, a novel magnetic heterostructure, CoFeO@CoFeMoO, is designed to simultaneously modulate charge and spin characteristics, and systematically elucidated their synergistic impact on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Experimental results and density functional theory calculations confirmed that the magnetic heterostructure exhibits both charge transfer and spin polarization.

November 2024

College of Basic Medical and Sciences, Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine, Harbin, Heilongjiang, 150040, People's Republic of China.

Understanding the physiology and pathology of neural circuits is crucial in neuroscience research. A variety of techniques have been utilized in medical research, with several established methods applied in clinical therapy to enhance patient' neurological functions. Traditional methods include generating electric fields near neural tissue using electrodes, or non-contact modulation using light, chemicals, magnetic fields, and ultrasound.
