Non-image forming (NIF) pathways, a specialized branch of retinal circuitry, play a crucial role supporting physiological and behavioral processes, including circadian rhythmicity. Among the NIF regions, the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), a midbrain serotonergic cluster of neurons, is also devoted to circadian functions. Despite indirectly send photic inputs to circadian centers and modulating their activities, little is known about the organization of retina-DRN circuits in primate species.

Lesions of the primary visual cortex (V1) cause retrograde neuronal degeneration, volume loss and neurochemical changes in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). Here we characterised the timeline of these processes in adult marmoset monkeys, after various recovery times following unilateral V1 lesions. Observations in NeuN-stained sections obtained from animals with short recovery times (2, 3 or 14 days) showed that the volume and neuronal density in the LGN ipsilateral to the lesions were similar to those in the contralateral hemispheres.

We describe a chamber system to perform imaging, electrophysiology and optogenetic stimulation in awake and anaesthetized marmosets. We developed this low-profile chamber design to be able to access the underlying tissue when needed, or to leave it sealed for long periods. Such accessibility is useful to maintain chamber clarity as well as perform viral or drug injections at different time points.

Menopausal symptoms of sleep disturbances, cognitive deficits, and hot flashes are understudied, in part due to the lack of animal models in which they co-occur. Recent studies in non-human primates do not find pronounced signals related to the animal's own body movements in the responses of neurons in the visual cortex. This is notable because such pronounced signals have been widely observed in the visual cortex of mice. Here, we discuss factors that may contribute to the differences observed between species, such as state, slow neural drift, eccentricity, and changes in retinal input.
