Article Abstract

Background And Aim: When a mandibulectomy causes discontinuity, the patient will need a rehabilitative prosthesis to achieve a proper occlusal relationship.

Technique: This article describes step-by-step guidelines for measuring the patient-specific mandibular guide flange angulation. In the presented technique, the flange angulation is determined by dividing the horizontal overlap of the maxillary posterior teeth plus the maxillary buccal clasp thickness by the vertical distance of the mandibular continuous clasp up to the maxillary buccal clasp.

Discussion: The mandibular guiding flange prosthesis must achieve an angulation that is appropriate for the particular circumstances of each patient to minimize the complications with mandibular deviation.

Clinical Relevance: The introduced method for measuring the patient-specific mandibular guide flange angulation can help prosthodontists to prepare the mandibular guiding flange prosthesis with higher accuracy and predictability.

Potential role of the light-adjustable lens in flanged intrascleral haptic fixation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares the maximum tensile strength of different 3-piece intraocular lenses (IOLs) used for flanged intrascleral haptic fixation (FISHF) at the Willis-Knight Eye Institute in Louisiana.
  • Results showed that the CT Lucia lens had the highest strength (1.53 N), outperforming other lenses like the MA60AC, AR40E, and LAL, with significant differences noted (P < .001).
  • The findings suggest that while the strength and angulation of lenses like the CT Lucia may support safe use in FISHF by skilled surgeons, more research is needed to ensure stability under physiological conditions or with light treatments.

Objective: To report a bone hook reduction technique combined with lateral parapatellar arthrotomy for periprosthetic distal femoral fractures following total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Methods: From April 2012 to June 2018, a total of 31 knees who underwent this technique for the treatment of periprosthetic distal femoral fractures following TKA were retrospectively reviewed. Through a lateral parapatellar arthrotomy, the vastus lateralis fascia was dissected from the muscle belly to allow anteromedial mobilization of the muscles.

Background: Fracture of femoral component in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has become a rare complication with improvements in metal alloy manufacturing technology.

Methodology: We report two cases of fracture of femoral components 9 and 10 years after primary TKA. The Buechel-Pappas (BP) knee system used in our two cases were designed by the same team who designed the LCS TKA implants.
