Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the relationships between sleep and attention in both typically developing (TD) children and children with ADHD.

Method: The current study examined sleep and attention in 50 children, from 6 to 12 years of age (25 ADHD, 25 TD). Attention was measured using the Conners' Parent Rating Scale-Revised: Long Version and the Attention Network Test-Interaction (ANT-I), which provided an objective measure of alerting, orienting, and executive attention. Sleep was objectively measured using actigraphy.

Results: Children with ADHD had poorer alerting and executive attention on the ANT-I, as well as poorer parent-reported attention. In addition, poor sleep predicted performance on alerting attention for children with ADHD and TD children, whereas the interaction between poor sleep and ADHD diagnosis predicted executive attention scores.

Conclusion: The findings of the current study highlight the importance of ensuring children are getting good quality sleep to optimize attention, particularly for children with ADHD.

Five-year-old children with autism spectrum disorders struggle with disengaging attention.

Jing Hengyi School of Education, Hangzhou Normal University, Yuhangtang Road 2318, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

It is known that individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) exhibit impairments in shifting attention. However, previous studies have primarily focused on school-aged children and adults with ASD. It remains unclear whether attentional shifting impairments emerge at an early age.

Developmental functional brain network abnormalities in autism spectrum disorder comorbid with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Eur J Pediatr

January 2025

Department of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, Children's Medical Center, The First Hospital of Jilin University, Jilin University, Changchun, China.

Unlabelled: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often co-occur. Developmental stages significantly influence the variations in brain alterations. However, whether ASD comorbid with ADHD (ASD + ADHD) represents a unique neural characteristic from ASD without comorbid ADHD (ASD-alone), or instead manifests a shared neural correlate associated with ASD across diverse age cohorts remain unclear.

Background: Optimization of localizer radiograph and bolus tracking doses is necessary, as their dose proportion may increase with a decreasing diagnostic scan dose in pediatric cardiothoracic computed tomography (CT).

Objective: To evaluate the radiation dose proportions of the localizer radiograph and bolus tracking in low-dose pediatric cardiothoracic CT.

Materials And Methods: For low-dose pediatric cardiothoracic CT, a posteroanterior localizer radiograph was acquired with 80 kV, and 35 mA or 20 mA in 852 infants (age<1 year).

Kaniusonyte and Laursen (2024) make an important contribution to our understanding of parental prohibitions of peer relationships and their relationship to other aspects of adolescent social functioning. This commentary develops several possible extensions to this interesting line of research with a goal of more specifically identifying the mechanisms that account for the relationships between prohibitions and adolescents' peer adjustment. Future investigations can build on this research by considering the role of conflict between parents and adolescents as a potential mediator or moderator in the process of prohibiting and considering the meaning of restrictive peer access to adolescents' peers across the developmental period.

Evolving Epidemiology of Mpox in Africa in 2024.

January 2025

Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa Department of Epidemiology, Columbia University, New York.

Background: For decades after the identification of mpox in humans in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 1970, the disease was largely confined to the rural areas of Central and West Africa and thus did not garner broad attention. On August 13, 2024, mpox was declared a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS) by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), a notice that was followed the next day by a declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization.

Methods: In this study we analyzed all mpox cases and deaths, based on clinical or laboratory diagnosis, that were reported to the Africa CDC from January 1, 2022, to October 30, 2024, to identify temporal variations, geographic distributions, and epidemiologic trends.
