Motivation: Mitochondria are essential for cellular metabolism and are inherently flexible to allow correct function in a wide range of tissues. Consequently, dysregulated mitochondrial metabolism affects different tissues in different ways leading to challenges in understanding the pathology of mitochondrial diseases. System-level metabolic modelling is useful in studying tissue-specific mitochondrial metabolism, yet despite the mouse being a common model organism in research, no mouse specific mitochondrial metabolic model is currently available.

Metabolic Profiles of Encapsulated Chondrocytes Exposed to Short-Term Simulated Microgravity.

Ann Biomed Eng

December 2024

Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Montana State University, PO Box 173800, Bozeman, MT, 59717-3800, USA.

The mechanism by which chondrocytes respond to reduced mechanical loading environments and the subsequent risk of developing osteoarthritis remains unclear. This is of particular concern for astronauts. In space the reduced joint loading forces during prolonged microgravity (10 g) exposure could lead to osteoarthritis (OA), compromising quality of life post-spaceflight.

Purpose: Meningiomas are central nervous system tumors whose incidence increases with age. Benign meningioma pathogenesis involves germline or somatic mutation of target genes, such as NF2, leading to clonal expansion. We used an established cancer epidemiology model to investigate the number of rate-limiting steps sufficient for benign meningioma development.
