Background: Pruritus is one of the major features of lichen planus (LP); however, its pathogenesis remains largely unknown. Objective. The aim of our study was to analyze the role of IL-31 in the pathogenesis of pruritus in LP.

Materials And Methods: The study group included 22 patients with LP. Control group consisted of 14 healthy volunteers. All subjects underwent thorough examination. Pruritus severity was evaluated with the visual analogue scale (VAS) and the 12-item Itch Questionnaire. IL-31 expression in the skin was assessed using semiquantitative immunofluorescence analysis.

Results: Pruritus maximal intensity according to VAS was 6.5 ± 2.7 points and according to the 12-item Itch Questionnaire 6.9 ± 2.8 points. Lesional LP skin showed significantly higher IL-31 expression compared to healthy skin (P < 0.001). The most abundant immunofluorescence was observed within granular layer. However, there was no correlation between expression of IL-31 and pruritus intensity assessed according to VAS (VASmax: ρ = -0.08, P = 0.73), as well as 12-item Itch Questionnaire: ρ = -0.11, P = 0.65.

Conclusions: Pruritus is a very common symptom of LP. For the first time we have demonstrated that IL-31 is overexpressed in the lesional skin of LP but its expression does not correlate with intensity of pruritus.

Introduction: Gabapentin is an antiepileptic drug that alleviates neuropathic pain. Its oral use reduces the intensity of pruritus in patients receiving chronic dialysis therapy. However, it could lead to toxicity because of the patients' renal deficiency.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic pruritus is a distressing skin condition commonly seen in the elderly, often linked to underlying health issues and skin changes due to aging.
  • A study tested a topical serum with magnetized saline water on five patients aged 69-80, who applied it daily for 14 days, and all reported significant reductions in itching severity.
  • While the treatment showed promise with no reported side effects, further clinical trials are necessary to better understand its effects and develop treatment guidelines.

Article Synopsis
  • Postburn pruritus is a frustrating symptom for individuals with healing or healed burn wounds, prompting the search for effective treatments.
  • A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of various interventions for postburn itch, analyzing 25 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with over 1,166 participants.
  • The interventions examined included neuromodulatory agents, topical therapies, physical modalities, laser treatments, and electrical stimulation, highlighting a range of approaches but leaving the effectiveness of each option still somewhat uncertain.

Hemodialysis is a conservative treatment for end-stage renal disease. It has various complications which negatively affect quality of life (QOL). This study aimed to examine the relationship between fatigue, pruritus, and thirst distress (TD) with QOL of patients receiving hemodialysis, while also considering the mediating role of treatment adherence (TA).
