Background: self-neglect (SN) is a global health and social problem affecting societies, which is largely hidden, under-reported and underresearched. Community nurses (CNs) and social workers (SWs) need to be knowledgeable about SN.
Objective: to determine CNs and SWs sources and level of SN knowledge.
Methods: quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional.
Subjects: CNs and SWs working in the community with older people at risk of SN.
Settings: participants were recruited from four Health Service Executive (HSE) areas in Ireland.
Instrument: a questionnaire was developed to elicit levels and sources of SN knowledge. A postal survey was used.
Results: of the 566 questionnaires posted, 339 responded (Nurses (N) N = 305; SWs N = 34), a 60% response. SWs had statistically higher knowledge scores (P = 0.002), and difference in average scores between CNs and SWs was statistically significant (P = 0.037). There was a statistically significant difference between practice and personal experience (P = 0.44), and use of literature/books (P = 0.037) between CNs and SWs, with SWs using both sources more. Higher knowledge scores were significantly associated with number of SN cases, higher education and gender.
Conclusion: there is a need for interdisciplinary training on SN.

The rare neurocutaneous condition known as Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is characterized by leptomeninges, or angiomas affecting the face, eyes, and brain. We report a newly diagnosed case that came to our institute complaining of a diminution of vision BE that had been going on for the past 1 year. Upon examination, the patient exhibited bluish discoloration of the sclera, an increase in the size of the cornea, and the characteristic port wine stain (PWS) on the face.

Objective: To examine whether objective sleep parameters are associated with cognitive function (CF) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) with chronic insomnia (CI) and whether the severity of these disorders is related to CF.
Method: Thirty patients with MDD with CI attending a tertiary care institution underwent two consecutive nights of polysomnographic (PSG) recording and a battery of neuropsychological tests, which included episodic memory, sustained attention, working memory, and executive function. The severity of MDD and CI was assessed by clinical scales.

Repulsive guidance molecule A (RGMa) is an inhibitor of neuronal growth and survival which is upregulated in the damaged central nervous system following acute spinal cord injury (SCI), traumatic brain injury, acute ischemic stroke (AIS), and other neuropathological conditions. Neutralization of RGMa is neuroprotective and promotes neuroplasticity in several preclinical models of neurodegeneration and injury including multiple sclerosis, AIS, and SCI. Given the limitations of current treatments for AIS due to narrow time windows to intervention (TTI), and restrictive patient selection criteria, there is significant unmet need for therapeutic agents that enable tissue survival and repair following acute ischemic damage for a broader population of stroke patients.

Rationale: Previous research suggests that sleep polysomnography and EEG endpoints can be used to assess GABAergic activity; however, the impact of GABA receptor positive allosteric modulators on sleep endpoints remains unclear.
Objectives: This phase 1 study compared a single dose of ASP8062 (35 mg or 70 mg), a GABA receptor positive allosteric modulator, with placebo and paroxetine (40 mg).
Methods: Healthy adult volunteers were randomized to four treatments (35 mg ASP8062, 70 mg ASP8062, paroxetine 40 mg, or matching placebo), each separated by a 14-day washout.

Systemic inhibition of neuropathy target esterase (NTE) with certain organophosphorus (OP) compounds produces OP compound-induced delayed neurotoxicity (OPIDN), a distal degeneration of axons in the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS), thereby providing a powerful model for studying a spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases. Axonopathies are important medical entities in their own right, but in addition, illnesses once considered primary neuronopathies are now thought to begin with axonal degeneration. These disorders include Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and motor neuron diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
