The effect of hematite with different specific surface areas (SSA) on anaerobic methanogenic process was investigated in this study using two different carbon sources (acetate or beef extract). Comparative analyses showed that methane generation rate, microbial growth and the starting-up duration were all significantly enhanced by hematite. The reduction rate of high SSA hematite was 2.5-3.5 times greater than that of low SSA hematite. This work indicated that low SSA hematite was superior to high SSA hematite in facilitating methanogenesis which was partially attributed to the lower affinity for the iron-reduction bacteria.

Ferrihydrite (Fh) is a vital geosorbent in the natural environment. Here, Fh materials with lanthanum (La) substituted in varied La/La + Fe ratios were synthesized, and these La-Fh materials were investigated in-depth via adsorption kinetic and isothermal experiments to explore their adsorption performance for chromate [Cr(VI)] in soils. Material properties of La-Fh were further characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Every day, significant quantities of solid wastes are generated in steel companies which causes environment pollution. These waste materials differ from one steel plant to other depending upon the steelmaking processes adopted and pollution control equipment installed. The most common type of solid wastes originated in steel plant are hot metal pretreatment slag, dust, GCP sludge, mill scale, scrap, etc.

The surface reactivity of iron (hydr)oxides plays a crucial role in controlling their interfacial reactions, for which various surface complexation models have been developed. The diversity of mineralogical properties of iron (hydr)oxides has resulted in a redundancy of model parameters, which hampers the modeling of iron (hydr)oxides in soils and sediments, where goethite, hematite and ferrihydrite dominate the iron (hydr)oxide mass fraction. To capture their combined surface reactivity, optimized generic protonation parameters of the Charge Distribution-Multisite Complexation (CD-MUSIC) extended-Stern-Gouy-Chapman (eSGC) model were derived by reanalyzing literature datasets and tested with some newly synthesized iron (hydr)oxides.

Determination of interactions of ferrihydrite-humic acid-Pb (II) system.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

March 2022

Ferrihydrite often precipitates with humic acid in natural ways, affecting the fate of lead ions, the stabilization of humic acid, and the aging process of ferrihydrite. A series of 2-line ferrihydrite-humic (Fh-HA) acid with varying C loadings has been prepared, the morphology and surface properties of Fh-HA organo-minerals have been characterized, and the adsorption property of Pb ions onto Fh-HA has been studied. The results indicated that a strong interference of HA to ferrihydrite 2-line Fh dominated mineral phase in all samples, but with increasing C/Fe molar ratios, the crystallinity gradually weakened, particles became smaller, and SSA decreased significantly.

Hematite facet-mediated microbial dissimilatory iron reduction and production of reactive oxygen species during aerobic oxidation.

State Key Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology, Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100085, China; University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100049, China. Electronic address:

Microbial dissimilatory iron reduction and aerobic oxidation affect the biogeochemical cycles of many elements. Although the processes have been widely studied, the underlying mechanisms, and especially how the surface structures of iron oxides affect these redox processes, are poorly understood. Therefore, {001} facet-dominated hematite nanoplates (HNP) and {100} facet-dominated hematite nanorods (HNR) were used to explore the effects of surface structure on the microbial dissimilatory iron reduction and aerobic oxidation processes.
