Background: The aims were to investigate the role of serum ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) and to evaluate the relationship between IMA and cardiac markers (creatine kinase myocardial isoenzyme [CK-MB] and cardiac troponin I [cTnI]) related to cardiac abnormalities in adult patients after nontraumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).

Methods: Twenty-nine patients with nontraumatic SAH admitted to the emergency department and 20 healthy adults as the control group were included in the study. Ischemia-modified albumin, TNF-α, MPO, CK-MB, cTnI, and leukocyte count (white blood cell [WBC]) in the circulation were measured on admission.

Results: Ischemia-modified albumin, TNF-α, and MPO levels were higher by mean values of 11.6%, 9.5%, and 2.9%, respectively, in patients with SAH compared with control group. However, levels of these parameters were not statistically different between the groups (P > .05). However, WBC, CK-MB, and cTnI values were significantly higher in patients with SAH compared with healthy control (P < .001, P < .01, and P < .05, respectively). White blood cell and cTnI levels in the circulation were positively correlated with patients' clinical severity (r = 0.598, P = .001 and r = 0.461, P = .012, respectively). Ischemia-modified albumin has a poor diagnostic value in comparison with WBC, CK-MB, and cTnI tests to differentiate between patients after SAH and controls according to receiver operating characteristic curve.

Conclusions: The results suggest that IMA is not better than CK-MB and cTnI in predicting a cardiac injury in patients after nontraumatic SAH.

Background: Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a prevalent and challenging neurological condition associated with high mortality and morbidity rates. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) combined with ginkgo diterpene lactone meglumine injection (GDLMI) on cognitive and neurological function recovery in patients with AIS.

Methods: A total of 120 patients with AIS, admitted between January 2021 and January 2022, received rTMS combined with GDLMI after admission.

Article Synopsis
  • Oxidative stress significantly impacts infants born to diabetic mothers (IDMs), leading to complications due to increased lipid peroxidation and ischemia modified albumin (IMA) levels.
  • Maternal glycemic control directly influences oxidative stress markers, with higher maternal HbA1c correlating to lower total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and higher MDA and IMA levels in cord blood.
  • Effective glycemic management in diabetic pregnancies is essential to mitigate oxidative stress and protect the health of infants.

Objective: The aim is to contrast the serum levels of thiol-disulfide homeostasis and ischemic modified albumin between patients with leiomyoma and healthy individuals and to assess the impact of oxidative stress on the etiopathogenesis of leiomyoma.

Methods: In this prospective case-control study, a total of 154 participants were included, consisting of 77 cases diagnosed with leiomyoma and 77 healthy individuals without leiomyoma. The demographic characteristics and ultrasonographic findings of the participants were recorded, and parameters such as albumin, ischemia-modified albumin, and thiol-disulfide homeostasis were evaluated.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disease with cognitive impairment being a crucial manifestation. Oxidative stress and inflammation play significant roles in the disease's pathogenesis. This systematic review explores the association between inflammation and oxidative stress markers, with cognitive outcomes in MS patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how thrombolytic therapy and endovascular thrombectomy affect certain blood markers related to brain damage in patients who had an acute ischemic stroke.
  • Results showed significant changes in S100B and thiol levels in the thrombolytic therapy group, indicating a potential reduction in brain injury, whereas the levels of disulfide and ischemia-modified albumin didn't significantly change.
  • The findings emphasize the need for further research to explore treatments that mitigate free radical damage during stroke recovery.
