Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by erythematous plaques with white scales. Its pathogenesis is closely linked to oxidative stress and an imbalance in Th1/Th2 immune responses. Current treatments for psoriasis, such as topical agents, systemic therapies and phototherapy, frequently fail to achieve complete remission in clinical settings.

In recent years, in vitro skin sensitization assays have been recommended as animal-free alternatives for the safety assessment of cosmetics and topical drugs, and these methods have been adopted in OECD test guidelines. However, existing assays remain complex and costly. To address this, we recently developed a more efficient, cost-effective, and accurate method for evaluating skin sensitizers by using immune cell-derived THP-1 cells as a biosensor, coupled with an RT-PCR-based assay.

Patchouli oil (PO) is a natural substance famous for its immune-enhancing and anti-inflammatory effects. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is characterized by epidermal gene mutations, skin barrier dysfunction, and immune dysregulation, making patchouli volatile oil a potential candidate for AD treatment. Initially, PO was mixed with ethyl oleate (EO), castor oil ethoxylated ether-40 (EL-40), anhydrous ethanol, and water to form a patchouli oil microemulsion (PO-ME) system.

This study aimed to investigate the expression of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP-1R) in the lacrimal gland and explore the effects of topical application of GLP-1R agonist (GLP-1RA) on lacrimal gland function in a murine model of type 1 diabetes. Tear secretion was evaluated using phenol red threads, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was used to explore gene expression profiles associated with hyperglycemia-induced lacrimal gland injuries, and histological analysis was conducted to evaluate the degree of damage. The expression of GLP-1R in the lacrimal gland was first identified and a downregulation trend associated with diabetes was observed.
