Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the value of SUV-based metabolic parameters derived from pretreatment F-FDG PET/CT of colorectal liver metastases in predicting disease response, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS).
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 70 colorectal patients with liver metastases who underwent pretreatment F-FDG PET/CT. SUVmean, SUVmax, TLG (total lesion glycolysis), metabolic tumor volume, and metabolic tumor diameter were the metabolic parameters derived from volume of interest analysis of the most FDG-avid liver lesion in each subject. Clinical and laboratory parameters were recorded. Tumor response was assessed by response evaluation criteria in solid tumors 1.1 criteria at 12 weeks after treatment. Associations between tumor response, metabolic parameters, and clinical/laboratory parameters were examined by 1-way analysis of variance. The relationship of the metabolic parameters with PFS and OS was determined by Kaplan-Meier analyses and further confirmed with multivariate Cox regression analyses.
Results: SUVmean less than 4.48, SUVmax less than 6.59, TLG less than 75.2, metabolic tumor volume less than 4.49 cm, and hemoglobin level greater than or equal to 11 g/dL were associated with longer PFS (P < 0.05). Prior surgery or radiofrequency ablation to the liver metastases was the only additional factor shown to be associated with longer OS.
Conclusions: SUV-based metabolic parameters derived from pretreatment F-FDG PET/CT can predict PFS in colorectal liver metastases.

Background: End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients frequently experience protein-energy wasting (PEW), which increases their morbidity and mortality rates.
Objective: This study explores the effects of nutritional status and pulmonary function on the short- and long-term mortality of ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Materials And Methods: 67 consecutive ESRD patients on maintenance hemodialysis were included in the study.

Resveratrol, a natural polyphenol, has shown promising neuroprotective effects in several in vivo and in vitro experimental models. However, the mechanisms by which resveratrol mediates these effects are not fully understood. Glutamate is the major excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain; however, excessive extracellular glutamate levels can affect neural activity in several neurological diseases.

The mechanisms underlying cooperative activation and inactivation of myocardial force extend from local, near-neighbor interactions involving troponin-tropomyosin regulatory units (RU) and crossbridges (XB) to more global interactions across the sarcomere. To better understand these mechanisms in the hearts of small and large mammals, we undertook a simplified mathematical approach to assess the contribution of three types of near-neighbor cooperative interactions, i.e.

Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are common in patients with Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), but their prevalence and possible causes are not yet fully known. This study assessed GI symptoms' prevalence and their possible origin by performing a predefined set of tests in adult WBS patients. Laboratory tests and a questionnaire were administered to assess GI symptoms and dietary habits.

Steatotic liver disease is prevalent among people with hepatitis C virus (HCV). The new definition of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) emphasises the metabolic drivers of steatosis and recognises its frequent coexistence with other chronic liver diseases, including HCV. We aimed to evaluate the association of coexisting MASLD and HCV with liver fibrosis.
