When the atomic nucleus of 125I decays by orbital electron capture followed by internal conversion, numerous very-low-energy electrons (Auger electrons) are emitted, so that the energy density in the immediate vicinity of the decay site is extremely high. 125I incorporated into DNA was as effective as densely ionising 5.3 MeV alpha-particles from 210Po in reducing the sperm-head population in mice. Hence the biological risks of Auger-electron emitting radionuclides widely used in biology and medicine ought to be reassessed.

Objectives: The aim is to assess the feasibility and accuracy of a novel quantitative ultrasound (US) method based on global speed-of-sound (g-SoS) measurement using conventional US machines, for breast density assessment in comparison to mammographic ACR (m-ACR) categories.

Materials And Methods: In a prospective study, g-SoS was assessed in the upper-outer breast quadrant of 100 women, with 92 of them also having m-ACR assessed by two radiologists across the entire breast. For g-SoS, ultrasonic waves were transmitted from varying transducer locations and the image misalignments between these were then related analytically to breast SoS.

Photon (X-ray) radiotherapy is the most common treatment used in cancer therapy. However, the exposure of normal tissues and organs at risk to ionising radiation often results in a significant incidence of low-grade adverse side effects, whilst high-grade toxicities also occur at concerningly high rates. As an alternative, boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) aims to create densely ionising helium and lithium ions directly within cancer cells, thus sparing the surrounding normal cells and tissues but also leading to significantly more effective tumour control than X-rays.

FLASH Bragg-Peak Irradiation With a Therapeutic Carbon Ion Beam: First In Vivo Results.

Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys

November 2024

GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Biophysics Department, Darmstadt, Germany; Life Science Engineering Department, Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen, Gießen, Germany.

Purpose: In recent years, ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) irradiation has emerged as a promising innovative approach to cancer treatment. Characteristic feature of this regimen, commonly referred to as FLASH effect, demonstrated primarily for electrons, photons, or protons, is the improved normal tissue sparing, whereas the tumor control is similar to the one of the conventional dose-rate (CDR) treatments. The FLASH mechanism is, however, unknown.

Management of Casualties from Radiation Events.

November 2023

Radiation events such as nuclear war, nuclear reactor incidents, and the deployment of a radioactive dispersal device (dirty bomb) are all significant threats in today's world. Each of these events would bring significant challenges to clinicians caring for patients with burns and traumatic injuries who are also contaminated or irradiated. The result of a nuclear exchange in a densely populated area could result in thousands of patients presenting with trauma, burns, and combined injury (trauma and burn in an irradiated patient).

Concurrent localized radiotherapy and systemic chemotherapy are standards of care for many cancers, but these treatment regimens cause severe adverse effects in many patients. Herein, we report the design of a mixed-ligand nanoscale metal-organic framework (nMOF) with the ability to simultaneously enhance radiotherapeutic effects and trigger the release of a potent chemotherapeutic under X-ray irradiation. We synthesized a new functional quaterphenyl dicarboxylate ligand conjugated with SN38 (HQP-SN) via a hydroxyl radical-responsive covalent linkage.
