Increasing evidence suggests that individuals infected with Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) compared to those who are not infected. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to systematically evaluate the mediating roles of 3,283 plasma proteins in the link between COVID-19 susceptibility and T2D by conducting proteome-wide Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses.

The fate and degradation of organic matter in aquatic systems is a vital link in nutrient cycling and sedimentation processes influenced by exogenous and endogenous factors, such as inputs from upstream sources, sediment suspension, and the decomposition of aquatic organisms. The interplay of organic carbon, microbes, and environmental factors shapes the distribution and degradation of organic matter. Characterizing the source distribution of sedimentary organic matter in aquatic systems using novel proxies can unravel new insights into the mechanisms that control its dispersal, preservation and fate, which is essential to understanding the global carbon and nitrogen cycles.

Biphasic glucose-stimulated insulin secretion over decades: a journey from measurements and modeling to mechanistic insights.

Life Metab

February 2025

New Cornerstone Science Laboratory, State Key Laboratory of Membrane Biology, Beijing Key Laboratory of Cardiometabolic Molecular Medicine, Institute of Molecular Medicine, National Biomedical Imaging Center, The Beijing Laboratory of Biomedical Imaging, Peking-Tsinghua Center for Life Sciences, School of Future Technology, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China.

Glucose-stimulated insulin release from pancreatic β-cells is critical for maintaining blood glucose homeostasis. An abrupt increase in blood glucose concentration evokes a rapid and transient rise in insulin secretion followed by a prolonged, slower phase. A diminished first phase is one of the earliest indicators of β-cell dysfunction in individuals predisposed to develop type 2 diabetes.

Osteoporosis under psychological stress: mechanisms and therapeutics.

Life Med

February 2024

State Key Laboratory of Oral & Maxillofacial Reconstruction and Regeneration, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, Shaanxi International Joint Research Center for Oral Diseases, Center for Tissue Engineering, School of Stomatology, The Fourth Military Medical University, Xi'an 710032, China.

Psychological stress has been associated with the onset of several diseases, including osteoporosis. However, the underlying pathogenic mechanism remains unknown, and effective therapeutic strategies are still unavailable. Growing evidence suggests that the sympathetic nervous system regulates bone homeostasis and vascular function under psychological stress, as well as the coupling of osteogenesis and angiogenesis in bone development, remodeling, and regeneration.

Cleft Lip and Palate Research in the United Kingdom: Advances in Clinical Psychological Knowledge and Future Directions.

Cleft Palate Craniofac J

January 2025

Centre for Appearance Research, University of West of England, Bristol, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

In 2012, the James Lind Alliance (JLA) worked with individuals with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P), their families and clinicians to identify priority areas for future research. This article reviews progress conducted in the United Kingdom in the 3 JLA priorities most closely related to Clinical Psychology. It then builds upon the original priorities to identify 4 future directions, based on contemporary literature and in-depth discussions between clinical and research experts.
