Published: May 2015

Objectives: The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between genetic polymorphisms in the mitochondrial thioredoxin reductase 2 (TrxR2) and myocardial infarction (MI) in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) of Slovenian origin.

Methods: The study population consisted of 972 Caucasian subjects with T2DM of more than 10 years' duration: 161 patients with MI and 811 patients with no history of coronary artery disease. Polymorphisms in thioredoxin reductase 2 (TXNRD2) gene, rs1548357, rs4485648, and rs5748469, were studied.

Results: Individuals carrying CC+CT genotypes of rs1548357 TXNRD2 polymorphism had lower prevalence of MI compared with TT genotype group (41.6% vs 52.8%, OR=0.589, 95% CI=0.368-0.942, P=0.027).

Conclusions: The TXNRD2 rs 1548357 polymorphism might be a genetic risk factor for MI in subjects with T2DM of Slovenian origin.

Trichomoniasis, caused by the parasite , is the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infection. Current treatment relies exclusively on 5-nitroimidazole drugs, with metronidazole (MTZ) as the primary option. However, the increasing prevalence of MTZ-resistant strains poses a significant challenge, particularly in the current absence of alternative therapies.

Specific cellular microenvironment, multi-enzyme complex and expensive essential cofactor make the biological manufacturing of plant chloroplast natural products (PCNPs) extremely challenging. The above difficulties have hampered the biosynthesis of capsanthin and capsorubin in the past 30 years. Here, we take capsanthin and capsorubin as examples to design an innovative microbial factory to promote the heterologous synthesis of PCPNs.

Silver N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes are known to form biscarbene species from monocarbene analogs in protic polar solvents. However, the effect of the respective species of silver NHC complexes on their biological activity against bacteria or cancer cells has not been systematically explored, either in vitro or in vivo. The direct and simple conversion of monocarbene silver N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) halide complexes (NHC)AgX, (X= Cl, Br) 1a/b - 5a/b to their biscarbene analogues (NHC)2AgX 1c/d - 5c/d is reported.

Background: Irisquinone, an important compound extracted from Semen Irisis, has been used clinically as a radiotherapy sensitizer for lung, oesophageal, head and neck, breast and leukemia cancers. However, the mechanism by which it acts against cancer is still unclear.

Objective: The present study aims to investigate the anti-tumor activity and mechanism of Irisquinone.

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is one of the highly fatal cancers and poses a serious threat to human health. Ferroptosis has been widely studied and proved to have an important role in tumor suppression, providing new avenues for cancer therapy; glutathione peroxidase 4(GPX4) and selenoprotein thioredoxin reductase(TXNRD1) are important regulatory targets in ferroptosis.Warburg effect is one of the important energy sources for cancer hypermetabolism, and pyruvate kinase isoenzyme 2 (PKM2) is a key metabolism enzyme that is important in this effect.
