In this review the current conceptions concerning zinc biology, its metabolism and transport into the cells, its homeostasis, a role in the functioning of the human immune and endocrine systems, participation in cell signaling and its cytotoxicity, as well as the biophysical mechanisms of action of zinc ions action at the elevated concentrations on human blood cells were analyzed.

Background: Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) represents a premalignant state presumably related to perturbations in circulating levels of trace elements.
Materials And Methods: Employing inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), we quantified essential and toxic trace elements in the sera of 60 women diagnosed with CIN and 60 age-matched healthy counterparts.
Results: Our investigation revealed a noteworthy higher levels in serum of Mn, Zn, and Pb, as well as lower levels in Ni, Se, Rb, and Mo levels within the CIN cohort.

Tuberculosis remains the deadliest infectious disease in the world and requires novel therapeutic targets. The ESX-3 secretion system, which is essential for iron and zinc homeostasis and thus survival, is a promising target. In this study, we perform a deep mutational scan on the ESX-3 core protein EccD in the model organism .

Wheat is one of the three most important cereals in the world, along with rice and maize. It serves as the primary food and source of energy for about 30-40% of the world's population. However, the low levels of micronutrients in wheat grains can lead to deficiencies of those micronutrients in people whose dietary habits are mostly based on cereals such as wheat.

Inorganic carbon uptake in cyanobacteria is facilitated by an energetically intensive CO-concentrating mechanism (CCM). Specialized Type-1 NDH complexes function as a part of this mechanism to couple photosynthetic energy generated by redox reactions of the electron transport chain (ETC) to CO hydration. This active site of CO hydration incorporates an arginine side chain as a Zn ligand, diverging from the typical histidine and/or cysteine residues found in standard CAs.
