The induction of general anesthesia leads to the development of atelectasis and redistribution of ventilation to non-dependent lung regions with subsequent impairment of gas exchange. However, it remains unclear how rapidly atelectasis occurs after the induction of anesthesia in obese patients. We therefore investigated the extent of atelectasis formation in obese patients in the first few minutes after the induction of general anesthesia and initiation of mechanical ventilation in the operating room.

Unlabelled: High-frequency oscillatory ventilation with volume guarantee (HFOV-VG) is a ventilatory mode that controls small tidal volumes at supraphysiological frequencies, potentially beneficial for preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).
Objective: To identify the physiological and clinical effects of HFOV-VG in preterm newborns with RDS, compared with conventional HFOV.
Method: Exploratory review of studies published between 2019 and 2023 of preterm newborns from 23 to 36 weeks of gestation with RDS, weighing ≥ 450g, with invasive HFOV support, using PRISMA flow diagram.

Increasing evidence indicates an association between microbiome composition and respiratory homeostasis and disease, particularly disordered breathing, such as obstructive sleep apnea. Previous work showing respiratory disruption is limited by the methodology employed to disrupt, eliminate, or remove the microbiome by antibiotic depletion. Our work utilized germ-free mice born without a microbiome and described respiratory alterations.

Background: Patients diagnosed with severe adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) often experience reduced pulmonary function and lung volume due to deformities in the spine and ribcage. Presurgical halo-pelvic traction (HPT) has been used to treat severe scoliosis before second-stage surgery. Nevertheless, there is a scarcity of studies utilizing computed tomography (CT) scans to evaluate changes in lung volume post-HPT.

Introduction: Low-flow oxygen therapy (LFOT) has been the only option for infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) requiring supplemental oxygen after discharge for years. Nasal high-flow therapy (NHFT) has more recently become available as a home device. We compared the impact of NHFT and LFOT on respiratory morbidity and lung function over the first 4 years in infants with BPD requiring respiratory support post-discharge.
