Background: Homocysteine is a potential predictor for contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN). We aimed to compare homocysteine with cystatin C as pre-procedure predictors for CIN in patients undergoing coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA).
Methods: A total of 580 consecutive patients were enrolled. Concentrations of plasma homocysteine and serum cystatin C were measured before CCTA. CIN is defined as an elevation of creatinine by ≥ 25% or ≥ 0.5mg/dl from baseline within 48h. Receiver operating characteristic curves, Pearson correlation coefficients and logistic regression analysis were used to evaluate the efficiency of potential predictors.
Results: Fifty-seven (9.83%) patients developed CIN. Concentrations of homocysteine (19.35 ± 4.32 μmol/l vs. 13.42 ± 3.96 μmol/l, p<0.001) and cystatin C (1.20 ± 0.21 mg/dl vs. 0.99 ± 0.15 mg/dl, p<0.001) increased significantly in CIN subjects. CIN was predicted by homocysteine (AUC 0.829, p<0.001) and cystatin C (AUC 0.774, p<0.001), while creatinine was not predictive. Both homocysteine and cystatin C had positive correlation with ΔCreatinine48h-0 (p<0.001) and negative correlation with ΔeGFR48h-0 (p<0.001). Regression analysis confirmed that increased baseline homocysteine [OR: 1.262 (1.123, 2.554), p<0.001] and cystatin C [OR: 1.565 (1.380, 1.775), p<0.001] were independent predictors for CIN.
Conclusions: Homocysteine, with similar predictive value compared to cystatin C, was an independent biomarker for predicting CIN before CCTA examination.

Hyperhomocysteinemia (serum homocysteine concentration > 15 μmol/L) is of high prevalence in chronic kidney disease (CKD). And myocardial hypertrophy is a common complication of CKD. Given that both hyperhomocysteinemia and cardiac hypertrophy have an association with CKD, we hypothesized that high level of plasma homocysteine (Hcy) is associated with a higher prevalence of ventricular hypertrophy(LVH) in adults with CKD.

Objective: To analyse the associations between renal function and clinical laboratory indicators and explore the renal function abnormality risk factors for gout patients in Southwest China.
Methods: Outpatient and hospitalized gout patients ( = 4384) at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu Medical College between January 2017 and December 2020 were divided into normal ( = 2393) and abnormal ( = 1991) renal function groups according to their eGFR. The relationships between clinical laboratory indicators and the eGFR were analysed, and a logistic regression model was fit to identify significant risk factors.

Objective: This paper was performed to unravel the predictive value of serum cystatin C (Cys C) and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) levels before vascular stent implantation for in-stent restenosis (ISR) 6-12 months after stent implantation for intracranial and extracranial arterial stenosis.
Methods: One hundred and ninety-eight patients who underwent dilatation stenting for intracranial and extracranial arterial stenosis and completed Digital Subtraction Angiography or head and neck CT- Angiography review were selected for the study and were divided into ISR group (n = 33) and no ISR (NISR) group (n = 165) according to the presence or absence of ISR. Serum levels of Cys C, MMP-9, triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), uric acid (UA), creatinine (Cr), homocysteine (Hcy), fibrinogen (FIB), total bilirubin (TBIL), endothelin-1 (ET-1), nitric oxide (NO), angiotensin II (Ang II), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels before vascular stent implantation were examined and compared between groups.
