Background: Herpes zoster (HZ) in patients receiving tumor necrosis factor (TNF) antagonists may be more severe and the incidence seems increased. The influence of TNF antagonists on varicella zoster virus (VZV) reactivation is unknown.
Objective: To prospectively search in a pilot study for VZV DNA in sequential blood samples before and after infliximab administration.
Setting: University medical center.
Subjects And Methods: Blood samples of six patients with longstanding and severe plaque psoriasis were taken on day 1 (before infliximab administration) and on days 2, 7, 21 and 42 for the determination of VZV viremia by ORF21 real-time polymerase chain reaction. Patients with varicella, HZ and normal subjects were included as controls.
Results: None of the six patients presented VZV viremia at any of the time points. High-load viremia was present during varicella, low-load viremia in some HZ patients and no viremia in the control patients.
Limitations: Small number of patients.
Conclusions: In this pilot study, infliximab did not reactivate VZV and did not induce subclinical VZV viremia.

During primary varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection, infected lymphocytes drive primary viremia, causing systemic dissemination throughout the host, including the skin. This results in cytokine expression, including interferons (IFNs), which partly limit infection. VZV also spreads from skin keratinocytes to lymphocytes prior to secondary viremia.

Avian leukemia is an infectious tumorous disease of chickens caused by subgroup A of the avian leukemia virus (ALV-A), which mainly causes long-term viremia, slow growth, immune suppression, decreased production performance, multi-tissue tumors, and even death. The infection rate of this disease is very high in chicken herds in China, causing huge economic losses to the poultry industry every year. We successfully expressed the specific antigen protein of ALV (P27) through recombinant protein technology and screened a pair of highly sensitive monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) through mouse immunity, cell fusion, and antibody pairing.

Background: The burden of herpes zoster (shingles) virus and associated complications, such as post-herpetic neuralgia, is higher in older adults and has a significant impact on quality of life. The incidence of herpes zoster and post-herpetic neuralgia is increased in people living with HIV (PLWH) compared to an age-matched general population, including PLWH on long-term antiretroviral therapy (ART) with no detectable viremia and normal CD4 counts. PLWH - even on effective ART may- exhibit sustained immune dysfunction, as well as defects in cells involved in the response to vaccines.

During primary infection, varicella zoster virus (VZV) infects epithelial cells in the respiratory lymphoid organs and mucosa. Subsequent infection of lymphocytes, T cells in particular, causes primary viremia allowing systemic spread throughout the host, including the skin. This results in the expression of cytokines, including interferons (IFNs) which partly limit primary infection.
